    Visit Team members have my gratitude and that of the entire campus I came away after the visit feeling very proud of our campus and looking forward to the outcome That said as I prepare for my discussion with the WASC Commission Panel I invite your thoughts on the Special Visit Team s report and our campus s response to it The documents in question along with the Special Visit Report prepared for the Special Visit Team are available at www csustan edu wasc 2014 special visit Documents Resources Please take a look and email me your comments by February 15 president csustan edu subject WASC Report Second I have received from the Academic Senate s Committee on Committees names of two faculty members recommended to serve on the Dreamers AB540 Committee I am pleased to accept those recommendations and to appoint Professors Horacio Ferriz and David Colnic to the committee They join students Dalila Perez and Jose Paredes as new committee members Other members include Noelia Gonzalez Amye Leon Luis Arrizon Araceli Garcia and Carolina Alfaro The committee is advisory to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs VP Suzanne Espinoza has asked Noelia Gonzalez to chair the committee I will attend their next meeting to clarify charge and terms of service to the extent clarification is needed Third thanks to all of you who have been helping us build a very strong alumni presence on the CSU 3 Million Alumni Yearbook website We are in third place at the moment and moving up quickly It has definitely been noticed But we want the lead So please keep the entries coming If you are an alum just go to www classof3million calstate edu and post your name and photo Or stop by University Advancement MSR 300 and someone

    Dr King s legacy for society in general and for higher education in particular I write today to note another legacy and to ask for your help 50 000 alumni carry forward a rich history of pride and purpose for CSU Stanislaus You ve heard me say that a large part of our potential to make a difference in the region rests not only with the contributions of our alumni but also with them actively telling our and their story My request today is that each person employed at Stan State reach out to one alumnus or alumna and ask him or her to take five minutes to join the CSU Alumni Yearbook Post a photo identify yourself as a CSU Stanislaus alum list your current town That s it one alum five minutes https classof3million calstate edu This is important After years of being off the system s radar which is okay until resources become scarce people are beginning to notice us If we can get about 500 posts on the Yearbook we likely will lead the CSU and hear the recent system refrain Who are those people How about They are the campus with the most loyal alumni A special request of our employees who are alumni all 300 of you please go online and enter yourself into the Yearbook We ll make it easy for you Come to the University Advancement Office MSR 300 anytime between 8 and 5 on January 28 They will take your photo professionally and enter it into the Yearbook for you Please do it it matters a lot The alumni focus will be particularly meaningful over the next few weeks on our campus Homecoming is near employee alumni luncheon on February 3 wearing Warrior Red on February 4 college alumni lunch and

    President About the President About the President Joseph F Sheley joined California State University Stanislaus as interim president on June 11 2012 and was appointed president by the California State University Board of Trustees on May 22 2013 Dr Sheley previously served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Sacramento State his alma mater After earning a Ph D in sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst Dr Sheley spent 21 years as a faculty member at Tulane University where he also served as chair of the Department of Sociology and faculty head of the University Senate Dr Sheley returned to Sacramento State in 1996 serving as dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies until 2005 In addition to his most recent role of provost and vice president for academic affairs he served as director of alumni relations from 2004 05 and as executive vice president from 2005 06 Dr Sheley has been awarded numerous grants and has published extensively in his general area of interest criminology and his particular field of expertise patterns of acquisition and use of firearms by juveniles He is a proponent of regional partnership roles for contemporary universities and of

    staff are encouraged to support student success by adopting a student In its simplest form this means connecting with the student and being there to listen in the course of the student s journey through the challenges of college Effective Writing Skills Effective writing requires and enhances the ability of students to think critically to research to formulate arguments and to persuade It is a skill that benefits people both professionally and personally and opens the doors to success The comprehension and expression that it entails forms the base of the liberal arts and sciences learning experience Increased attention is being given to working with students and providing them with resources to improve their writing skills We are also building partnerships that support efforts to prepare K 12 students with the writing skills necessary to enter and then succeed in college Learn more about the GROW Greatness Relies On Writing Project Engaging the Region We must reach out to businesses schools local governments and community organizations and build partnerships to develop strategic priorities and solve regional problems in new and innovative ways To do this we need to identify our region s most critical needs asking questions about which industries in our region are in the greatest need of educated workers and what broadly applicable skills are most deficient in our region s workforce Campus Community Health and Safety A conversation is underway with campus constituencies to frame a recommendation to President Sheley for an integrated campus community health and safety initiative This initiative will focus on health and safety as a full campus community matter rather than separate concerns of students faculty and staff Diversity Stanislaus State is committed to serving the needs of a student body that reflects the cultural and racial diversity of the region This starts
