    college and university I sought a job like most other people and I found that I could get interviews but I would never get hired or called back possibly because I was blind Randy Cooper told DoD News in an interview to mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month President Barack Obama set aside October as a time to recognize the significant contributions American workers with disabilities make every day It s an opportunity for us to be aware of the issues and stereotypes and fears we have about people with disabilities Cooper said as well as to understand how the department can better recruit train and advance those with disabilities DoD seeks to hire people with disabilities To that end Cooper is leading a whole of DoD effort to hire more people with disabilities including troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan In fact the president has directed us through executive order to try and increase the number of people with targeted disabilities by up to two percent he said These are people who have significant barriers to entering the work place On Oct 30 the department will host the 2014 Defense Disability Awards Ceremony Twenty civilian employees as well as the service components will be recognized for their accomplishments in ensuring a barrier free work environment among the twenty DoD employees to be awarded the 2014 Secretary of Defense Awards for Outstanding DoD Employees and Service Members with Disabilities will be DoDEA educator Ms Jennifer Weber a 5th grade teacher at Diamond ES Fort Stewart Georgia One resource the department taps for hiring the disabled is a partnership with the Department of Labor called the Workforce Recruitment Program a referral program for disabled students and recent graduates This past year we had over 250 participants in the program Cooper said

    You Tube Search DoDEA Quick Links DoDEA Director Becoming a Teacher Current Vacancies DoDEA Curriculum Newsroom Press Releases Multimedia Media Advisories Publications Downloads DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items Dahlgren School Tiger Pride Beth Hankins Dahlgren October 22 2014 Photo October has two major commemorations Red Ribbon Week a campaign to encourage students to remain drug free and Unity Day a day where students across the country pledge to keep their school s bully free The Dahlgren Student Council felt that these two activities were important but wanted to take the ideas a step further and promote great student citizenship within our school Toward that end our student leadership sponsored Tiger Pride Month a time where we celebrated the positive attributes of our students At the beginning of the month students were given a Tiger Pride card and told that if they were caught doing good things they would get a stamp If they filled their card with stamps they would receive a prize from the Principal and have their name announced at Morning Announcements Our PTO joined in and offered allstudents caught doing good deeds a ticket to win a free book at the book fair Student Council then asked classes to respond to the prompt I show my Tiger Pride by This not only allowed us to practice crafting constructed responses but also allowed us to reflect on what each of us thought good citizenship in school looked like Our 8th grade students reviewed all of the responses determined what they thought were major themes and created the Tiger Pride Pledge which is attached On 22 October Student Council supplied every student staff member and parent volunteer an orange tie dye shirt so that we could join schools around the world
