    The Bayonet Ft Benning May 23 2014 They might be young but Faith Middle School students showed they can make an impact in the world said sixth grader Lauryn Vigeland and vice president of the student council The school led by the student council and members of the National Junior Honor Society managed to raise 2 500 for Pennies for Patients triple the amount of their original goal Pennies for Patients is a program that raises money to help those who have leukemia lymphoma and myeloma according to the Pennies for Patients website The students fundraised for three weeks with events such as dress down days and jean days where students paid to wear jeans or dress casually The fundraiser also included a basketball game between students and faculty and staff They charged 1 for entry and also provided snacks and beverages With the help of the Parent Teacher Organization the students put on a spring dance with half of the proceeds going to the Pennies for Patients fundraiser Rebecca Willoughby s eighth grade class raised 131 which was the highest amount raised by a class Sixth grader Xzaviar Lewis the student council s activity coordinator said he was touched to see how interested students were in helping others There were a few students who gave me 3 or 5 he said about sixth graders And I d ask them if they wanted the their change back And they said no it was for the cause Seventh grader Elana Ornelas who is the student council secretary and on NJHS said they put on other community service projects including collecting 152 books that were given to the Ronald McDonald House and collecting 550 items donated to the Battle Buddy Resource Center on post It s good to help other people beside

    ended the regular season by winning the inaugural Sisters in Arms series with DoDEA rival Fort Campbell Saturday sweeping the double header matchup 15 0 and 6 5 It was the first time in recent memory the two schools have met on the softball diamond But Fort Knox wasn t done yet Monday the Eagles defeated John Hardin 13 2 in the opening round of the 17th District Tournament their first playoff win in head coach s Rick Thompson s 20 years at the school It was the seventh this season the Eagles have scored double digit runs The Eagles ended its season in the semifinals of the tournament losing to Central Hardin 15 0 but was still able to call the season a success based on the progress made throughout the season The players agreed they didn t want the year to end because of how close everyone on the team has become I like how we re all a family freshman second baseman Jayci Gomes said Being a military school the last thing you want is for someone on your team to not like you Everyone on this team is always nice to each other always pumping each other up The Eagles may have played its best game of the season against the Bulldogs scoring six runs in the first inning and never looking back Fort Knox put runs on the board in four of the five innings played including five in the third Freshman pitcher Taylor Stephenson picked up the win after allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking six At the plate sisters Olivia and Natalie Nieto did damage collecting three hits with three RBIs four runs scored and three stolen bases Sophomore outfielder Bailey Rasmussen added a single two RBIs and two

    the 26th annual National Geographic Bee held here May 19 21 Representing the 50 states the District of Columbia Atlantic Territories Pacific Territories and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools participants ranged in age from 11 to 15 as they competed for the 2014 spelling crown and three college scholarships provided by this year s sponsor Google I ve had an interest in geography when I was young and got curious about the National Geographic Bee when I was in third grade Patrick said In 1989 the National Geographic Society developed the National Geographic Bee in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States Patrick a 14 year old Ryukyu Middle School student lives in Okinawa Japan where his father Marine Corps Col Stephen Lewallen is the commander of Camp Hansen Lewallen recounted how his support of overseas contingency operations in the recent years influenced his son s burgeoning interest in geography As I would travel around my wife Wendy would put pins on a map in the garage and she would show him where daddy was and that s really how it started the colonel said It grew from there and they started doing quizzes on globes and my wife started buying geography books So when the family arrived to Okinawa five years ago Lewallen said both of his sons started competing in the National Geography Bee and for the past two years Patrick has been at the national level Patrick a geography whiz revealed some of his methods in keeping his world trivia skills sharp through tools like Wikipedia and a National Geographic A to Z Geo Scavenger hunt book that help him study The book tells you basic things like capitals major rivers cities plateaus valleys and other details

    Full Circle Devilpup Tribune Camp Lejeune NC May 22 2014 Anisa Trody with her dad Photo Unknown High school sweethearts who marry are sometimes hard to find What is rarer is to find the daughter of those high school sweethearts attending the same school where they met Rarer yet is the fact that the school is a Department of Defense Education Activity DoDEA school Anisa Trody s parents met in 1992 at Lejeune High School As a freshman in high school the future Mrs Trody was walked by her best friend to Mrs Tootle s class for Spanish each day After walking her to class for some time Mr Trody gathered the courage to ask her on a date They hit it off and she and Mr Trody went to prom together in 1996 They married two years after her graduation In 1999 Anisa was born and remained the only child As she grew up she moved around just like the rest of military dependents from station to station and attending several different schools When her dad got orders to move to Camp Lejeune she said it was kind of cool because she already knew a lot about the school since her mom and dad went there She said she has some of the same teachers as her parents including Mrs Tootle Mrs Martinez Mr Schumacher and Mrs Woodworth When her mom attends parent teacher conferences she always looks for her old teachers to visit Anisa said her parents are more actively involved in her school activities because they know the teachers and administrators at the school better Her mom said coming back and you can see the teachers still care and they have a special touch The biggest changes her mom said she has noticed are that the auditorium

    Search DoDEA Quick Links DoDEA Director Becoming a Teacher Current Vacancies DoDEA Curriculum Newsroom Press Releases Multimedia Media Advisories Publications Downloads DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items DoDDS Europe program showcases student art and literature DoDDS Europe Robert Purtiman WIESBADEN Germany May 21 2014 Photo In a ceremony today at the Wiesbaden High School library Dr Nancy Bresell DoDDS Europe director officially launched the Illuminations website an online student anthology that showcases student art and literature The event which was streamed to more than 60 DoDDS Europe schools showcases some of the best works by the DoDDS Europe students Students from pre school to 12th Grade can submit their work which will be vetted through a screening committee Only those that are determined most worthy and publishable are included in the website It is really incredible that we produced with your work and efforts such a fabulous online student anthology of student creative production Dr Bresell said to a crowd of Wiesbaden students I am amazed at the work on display here This is the third year Illuminations has been published in this format The digital format allows for art literature music and student readings to be presented One of the highlights of the site is the virtual 3D art gallery where visitors can browse through the works in six different rooms as if they were in an actual art gallery Additionally the site has a built in social media component where students can share their works via Facebook to their family and friends around the world Close to 1 000 original works from students are presented this year Submissions are already being accepted for next year s program As the Director it is so easy for me to support programs like this
