    the school s annual Time to Shine Rally For the last three year s FRES has celebrated the hard workand dedication of its students as they prepare for Terra Nova Week Terra Nova is a nationally standardized assessment whichis given to students throughout the world FRES Principal Vicki Gilmer said Fort Rucker Elementary School has continued to receive outstanding scores eachyear and is consistently high above the national average McQueen whose father was in the Army is an FRES alumnus He used his experiences in medical school and as a footballplayer at the University of Alabama to inspire the students to get ready getset and go when it comes time to take their test When I was going to school at Alabama we spent a lot moretime getting ready than we did actually playing the game McQueen said You ve been doing the same thing all year for this test McQueen said being ready means studying but getting setmeans being ready to perform on the day of the test He told the students to get plenty of rest eat a goodbreakfast and come to school to take on the Terra Nova with confidence When you finally go you have to have passion McQueensaid You can t get discouraged At some point during that test you ll think I can t do this but you have to have the attitude that you can do this andyou have to finish strong McQueen didn t just encourage the students He also spoke directly to the teachers who have prepared theFRES students all year long He said he started striving for his dreams in elementaryschool when a teacher encouraged him to develop a passion for reading There s somebody in this room who s going to have a dreamthat starts right here at Fort

    Fort Knox KY February 21 2014 The Fort Knox High School swim team didn t get 290 points at region like they wanted but the team still has plenty of reasons to smile Two individuals and two relays on the girls side will advance to Pannell Swim Shop KHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville next weekend pacing the Eagles to a third place finish in the Region Three meet at Russell County High School with 218 points The boys chipped in with 48 points and a 14th place finish putting the Eagles in sixth place overall with both scores calculated We did not make the 290 goal and I d be really upset if we didn t swim our best but we did head coach Jonas Sosa said Kids were breaking their personal records left and right We had a fantastic meet Unfortunately we re not the only ones who had a monster meet Sisters Monica and Miriam Smith earned berths to state with third place finishes in the 100 fly and 50 free respectively and also swam legs for the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay that landed state bids with fourth place finishes If the state lineup is the same as region the Smith sisters will be joined in the 200 medley by Emily Kiphuth and Erika Manning with Kiphuth and Sabrina Wicker taking part in the 200 free The state meet begins Thursday with warm ups in the pool The competition starts Friday with preliminaries and Saturday will be the day the championship heats will be held and where points are scored Miriam said the team hopes to make the second day of state which would mean qualifying in the top 16 Friday Our goal is to make it to

    how to keep a healthy heart during the school s observance of American Heart Month According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States The month of February also known as American Heart Month is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and teaching ways to prevent it Nurse Debbie Doggett and special area teachers at Fort Rucker Primary School believe it is important to start teaching young children how to keep a healthy heart with diet and exercise They ve already developed eating habits and if they can learn when they re young what the important things are to keep their bodies healthy then hopefully they ll carry that on throughout their lifestyle Doggett said During the entire month special area teachers are collaborating and adding their own emphasis to teaching the topic of maintaining a healthy heart to the kindergarteners and first graders Doggett said in the media center the students are reading books about the subject matter in music class they are singing songs and in P E they are exercising and performing special dances On Feb 5 kindergarten students gathered in the gymnasium at the school and learned a quick lesson about the heart and what it does before dancing the chicken dance and cha cha slide Doggett also showed the students how the heart contracts like a muscle using a clear balloon filled with red watercolor We have to exercise our hearts to keep it strong she said Doggett said the main thing she wants the children to understand is eating healthy foods and exercise will help them grow and keep their bodies strong Kindergarten student Jackson Ford seems to already understand the concept You should only get
