    accomplishments Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8 20 girls the participants go through a 24 lesson curriculum that is broken into three main parts understanding ourselves valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large Angela Masdea mother of Madyson and Emma two girls in the program believes her daughters efforts have taught them valuable lessons The entire program and what it offers our girls is great said Masdea It is a running program but it also teaches lessons such as bullying self image and community service Four Marines from MALS 29 served as the coaches for Girls on the Run and worked hand and hand with the girls from Delalio to help the team transform from a group of strangers to a group of self aware and confident young ladies prepared to tackle the challenges the program had for them The program doesn t measure success in the amount of participants it receives said 1st Lt Jessica Fox one of the coaches from MALS 29 The organization values the importance of the lessons it strives to teach young girls and praises each girl who understands the concept of personal growth and self importance Madyson and Emma Masdea two participants in the program at Delalio Elementary School aboard MCAS New River gave their opinions of the program The coaches are awesome and the program allowed us to show our personalities said Emma I love the Girls on the Run program said Madyson Before I couldn t run Now I can run with my teammates my friends encourage me and we are also helping our community At the end of the season girls and their running buddies came together and completed a five kilometer run that provided the girls the opportunity

    challenge the judges look at your robot s design attachments build and programming and how well it runs the obstacle course said Vicki Gilmer Fort Rucker Elementary School principal For the research based project they had to look at some kind of natural disaster and how they would solve a problem to go with that And the core values challenge is where they give the kids a random problem that the children are not prepped for and they look at how they interact with each other and how they problem solve in a difficult situation The theme of the competition was Nature s Fury so each aspect of the competition revolved around learning about natural disasters They had to research natural disasters and the very first thing the students did to prepare was go to Enterprise s Emergency Fair to learn how cities prepare for different types of emergencies said Donna Brecher gifted education class teacher While there they were inspired to learn more about pet safety during weather emergencies The team also visited local weather stations and pet day care centers to learn more about pet weather safety Gilmer said that the students chose a topic that was important to them and since the area is not immune to severe tornados and all of the students have pets she said it was a theme that was close to all of them for the research portion of the competition Their curiosities about what happens to pets during natural disasters led them to the direction they took she said The students came up with an emergency pack which basically is a red backpack that anyone in the Family can grab that is full of things for the Family pets like food and shot records For the technology aspect of the competition the students created an app for smart phones Though the app is not up and running because of funding the students said that working with modern technology is the best thing about the robotics club I love technology and one of my favorite things to play with even before was Legos said Bryan So this is both of them in one and it is great Alyssa Griffith a 10 year old in the fifth grade agreed saying that it was really fun getting to do something different and new with technology We get to work with modern day robots and it is neat and fun We build lots of things in the club like merry go rounds and other electronics that we have to program she said For the robot game a large Lego table was set up like the aftermath of a natural disaster such as a hurricane or tornado There was rubble and water obstacles the student s robots had to go over as well as a set of tasks such as rescuing animals and people taking off Lego tree limbs safely and delivering emergency supplies via Lego plane and Lego vehicles all within a time limit according

    and reminded them to remember the deployed soldiers who can t be home with their families and friends during the holiday season I d like to remind everybody to remember those from our ranks that can t be here tonight because of ongoing deployments he said Keep those serving out of harm s way along with their families Our thoughts and prayers are with them this holiday season McRae also took time to recognize the 2013 Military Family of Excellence Families were nominated for the Families of Excellence contest based on their contributions to soldiers civilians and their families in their organization unit or workplace and the Fort Rucker community as a whole This year s winner was the Eblen family father and company executive officer for E Company 1st 212th Aviation Regiment Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joval his wife Irene and their children Divina 10 Isabella 9 Isaiah 8 and Maribel 6 In recognition of your thoughtful and selfless service in support of the Fort Rucker community your care and concern has enhanced the quality of life for soldiers civilians and their family members McRae read from a certificate to the family Your willingness and commitment to share your resources and time is truly commendable and reflects the great credit upon you the U S Army Aviation Center of Excellence and the U S Army Thank you very much McRae and Fort Rucker Deputy Commander Col Robert Doerer presented the family with a certificate and several gifts from the post I don t really do much more than anybody else in the installation except support the war fighter training Joval said But my wife obviously does a lot of things above and beyond Irene became emotional and said her family is very grateful to have received the recognition We

    highly competitive Welcome to the Jingle Jog Joseph Plato physical education teacher at Dahlgren School told students and parents We are still celebrating the Month of the Military Family We wanted to let you guys know that we do understand how tough it is to be part of the military family You guys do special things that a normal family doesn t I grew up as a military child as well so I understand and our teachers understand We just wanted to thank you and show our commitment to your children s education Plato thanked Margie Stevens a contractor assigned to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Corporate Communications Office and a Dahlgren School alum and Friends of Dahlgren School for providing prizes I wanted to give special thanks to Margie Stevens and Friends of Dahlgren School for ten turkeys plus gift cards for second place he said After some adorable warm up exercises the race kicked off with a speedy heat of pre kindergarten students The contestants quickly completed the one sixth mile encouraged by parents teachers and fellow students Young Angel won the boy s portion of the pre kindergarten category His secret I ate vegetables he explained Pre kindergarten student Sunnie finished first among the girls and cited similar race preparations I ate a bunch of fruit she said I did it all by myself Sunnie s mom Patricia Brown said she appreciated the inclusiveness cultivated by the event and others like it at Dahlgren School It encourages the students because all of them get to participate she said This is like a family here on base and everyone wants to be included The Brown family had big plans for Sunnie s prize turkey I don t know if we can hold out until Christmas said

    DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items Fort Campbell Middle school students collect recyclables to benefit school Earth by Michelle Vowell TheGoldStandard Fort Knox KY December 12 2013 Wassom Middle School eighth grader Drabin Morgan wants to save the planet by recycling one piece of trash at a time If we don t recycle one day our planet is going to be gone and it s going to be our fault said the 14 year old student So I think helping the earth also helps everybody on the earth Morgan and her peers help to preserve the earth through the Fort Campbell Ky school s new recycling program Launched in Septem ber Wassom has partnered with TerraCycle an international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult to recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable innovative products according to terracycle com Our program helps earn money for our school and different charities while keeping unnecessary amounts of trash out of our landfills wrote recycling coordinator Julie Deckard in a letter to Wassom parents The partnership enables students to recycle and keep waste out of landfills while helping Wassom earn easy money for the school Participating in a TerraCycle brigade is totally free There are no signup or participation fees and the shipping is covered by the program It s easy because this fundraiser isn t requiring you to go out and buy a product it s stuff we all use in our house every day Deckard said We just need to make sure they re going to recycling and not to the trash can TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U S and 22 countries overseas to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for
