    assigned to 39th ABW at Incirlik Air Base Incirlik Turkey He has also been selected to be part of a select group of 2013 scholars that will attend the tenth annual U S China Student Leaders Exchange The exchange a partnership between the National Committee on United States China Relations andthe China Educational Association for International Exchange is a two week study tour of China with visits scheduled to Changsha Xi an and Beijing The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars appointed by President Obama selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success artistic excellence essays school evaluations and transcripts as well as evidence of community service leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals Of the three million students expected to graduate from high school this year more than 3 300 candidates qualified for the 2013 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers or the National YoungArts Foundation s nationwide YoungArts TM competition The 2013 U S Presidential Scholars are comprised of one young man and one young woman from each state the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and from U S families living abroad as well as 15 chosen at large and 20 U S Presidential Scholars in the Arts Bryce was selected in the Americans Abroad category He cited his most influential teacher as Ms BethAnn Matar Incirlik Unit School Bryce will be honored along with the other selectees and will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion at a Washington ceremony on June 16th Created in 1964 the U S Presidential Scholars Program has honored more than 6 000 of the nation s top performing students with the prestigious award given to honorees during the annual ceremony in D C The program

    randomly assigned every participant to a team where they would receive the day s challenges Their first task was to create a team name It was a simple instruction but the students quickly encountered the first hurdles of leadership learning to listen and cooperate After completing the team name activity the leader trainees listened to a presentation from junior Phillip Ramirez He emphasized that positions of authority do not automatically equal positions of leadership Leaders require followers stressed Ramirez and they should work for their followers The morning continued with teambuilding activities interspersed with presentations from the student facilitators Senior Christy Chanin who presented a lecture on time management said the activities helped the students delve into their budding talents They were able to explore the qualities of leadership and collaboratively discover the characteristics that shape the potential leaders they are becoming Some of the other presentation topics were motivation communication and problem solving and each had a related endeavor Many of the students particularly enjoyed the problem solving activity the marshmallow challenge The leaders had to use spaghetti some string and tape to build a structural support for one marshmallow The team with the highest most stable marshmallow construction emerged as the winner Like many of his fellow participants Maxim Granville loved the activity because it was fun but also because as he stated It was challenging One of the other highlights of Leadership Day was the VIP luncheon Vilseck High School is attached to USAG Grafenwoehr and the top three leaders of the garrison Colonel James Saenz Deputy Kathy Aydt and Command Sergeant Major William Berrios Rodriguez sat down with the participants for a good meal served by VHS teacher Jane Varalli and her Culinary Arts class The students were appreciative for the unique face time they received
