  • Fourth grade DoDEA Pacific student creates winning recipe, attends White House Kids’ State Dinner
    Giles meets President Barack Obama during the fourth annual Kids State Dinner at the White House He told her You look very elegant in your pearls today The First Lady s Office s congratulatory note to Giles on her winning recipe of multi grain thin spaghetti low sodium soy sauce edamame and more said her creativity passion and commitment are helping build a brighter future for your family friends and entire generation Giles was elated when she first learned she was among 55 students going to the White House I couldn t believe it I jumped up and down and was screaming in excitement The 9 year old s selected dish represents her Japanese heritage love for noodles and her father Navy Cmdr Tony Giles I wanted to make something simple and healthy but yummy too said Giles I think it tastes great and it reminds me of times eating yakisoba with my dad Each contestant was required to include the title of an original recipe for one healthy lunchtime meal incorporating the United States Department of Agriculture nutrition guidance supporting MyPlate at ChooseMyPlate gov particularly filling half the plate or recipe with fruits and vegetables A brief essay had to provide some details about their recipe including how all or most of the major food groups would be served with their dish WASHINGTON D C July 10 Gracie Giles right stands with First Lady Michelle Obama and her mom Becky during the fourth annual Kids State Dinner at the White House along with 54 other winners from the U S Giles won the trip with her dish Y obama Yakisoba Throughout the process I was very excited to watch Gracie brainstorm recipes and think about her favorite foods and how they could be incorporated into a healthy recipe said Becky Giles Gracie s mom It s always exciting to see your child motivated to do something that is good for them uses their creativity and challenges them to work hard to achieve it Giles said she was able to see and do a lot of things at the White House like seeing original artwork touring the Garden and listening to the live music from the military jazz band Gracie Giles recipe was placed in the 2015 health lunchtime challenge Kids State Dinner cookbook which features the top recipes from future chefs of America Her recipe is available online at http to pbs org 1OideTi Mrs Obama was only one table away from me during the dinner and President Obama stopped to talk to me on the way out and said You look very elegant in your pearls today said Giles My favorite things were meeting the President touring the rooms especially the Blue room which is grand and very majestic and seeing my very own recipe printed in the cookbook The entire 2015 Kids State Dinner can be viewed on YouTube at http bit ly 1QlmQdG The 2015 Healthy Lunchtime Challenge The annual challenge gives students the ability to

  • Kinnick High School Navy JROTC cadet receives prestigious national award
    with her parents and Navy JROTC instructors during a Kinnick High School assembly From left to right retired Navy Lt Cmdr Kevin Mode Chief Petty Officer Manual Badiola Yvonne Badiola Caycelyn Badiola and retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Richard Kilanski stand together Released Photo courtesy of Robert Tiffany The Bronze Cross is awarded to the Nation s top 22 high school junior cadets for scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects during the student s junior year of high school Students must be in the top 10 percent of the JRTOC class and of their overall academic class to be considered as an honored cadet I m truly proud of such a reward that is presented to a small number of cadets said Badiola It s something that will definitely keep me motivated to continue going beyond for my unit Kinnick High School s Senior Naval Science Instructor retired Navy Lt Cmdr Kevin S Mode commended her for being an exemplary leader superb team member and scholastic achiever along with praising her relentless community involvement As only one of two females on the Armed Regulation and Exhibition teams she demonstrated flawless performances earning first and second place finishes in the 2014 Japan Regional and Far East Drill Competitions Mode wrote in Badiola s award recommendation letter Badiola also led her Unarmed Exhibition Drill Team to first place in the 2014 Japan Regionals and Far East Drill Competition which led to the team s invitation to the 2014 Hawaii Pacific Invitational Drill Competition In Hawaii they took first place overall in the Unarmed Expert Drill category HONOLULU March 8 2014 Kinnick HS Cadet Master Chief Petty Officer Badiola second row on left stands with her Navy JROTC Red Devil Drill Team after winning the Pacific Drill Championship in Hawaii The Red Devil Drill team was among 22 Navy Marine Corps Army and Air Force JROTC units participating in the Pacific championship Released Photo courtesy of Robert Tiffany Badiola set a standard for others to follow with a GPA of 3 89 putting her in 11th place academically in her junior class She shared her study skills as leader of the JROTC Red Devil Company s Echo Platoon helping her cadets attain an average of 81 percent in test scores I ve always been a busy student since middle school so I ve learned to prioritize in order to complete my tasks said Badiola who participates in many clubs including the Kinnick HS marching band and mentoring program My personal belief is that once you re involved in something why not put in 110 percent effort If not then what you re doing will go to waste Do it to the fullest This is what I also try to tell other students as well Badiola said Retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Richard Kilanski said Badiola works hard is motivated and earned this award through her selfless dedication to Kinnick High School s Navy JROTC program and her relentless pursuit of
