    Quick Links DoDEA Director Becoming a Teacher Current Vacancies DoDEA Curriculum Newsroom Press Releases Multimedia Media Advisories Publications Downloads DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items AHS Cheerleaders Performed in Macy s Thankgiving Day Parade AHS Pirate Cheerleaders AHS Cheerleader Sponsor New York City December 14 2015 AHS Pirate Cheerleaders Photo Cheerleader Sponsor The Pirate Cheerleader Team of Antilles High School on Fort Buchanan in Guaynabo Puerto Rico performed in the Spirit of America Productions 89 th Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City Theirs was the first team ever to be selected from Puerto Rico and the first cheerleading team to be selected from the Department of Defense Education Activity DoDEA schools to participate in the much loved annual event This was an amazing honor for our team for our families and for me said Dr Laura Alvarez AHS cheerleader coach Our efforts the long hours of practice our sweat and tears paid off A dream we thought was out of reach came true Coach Alvarez added that previously cheerleaders were invited to participate in Spirit of America Productions Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade routine only if they attended summer cheerleading camp but that rule changed Little did the squad know that at the final basketball game in February their halftime performance was being video recorded as an audition That video was quickly sent off to Spirit of America along with an application explaining the team s story Coach Alvarez a veteran cheerleader from Florida participated in this same event in her high school senior year Knowing what this event meant to her she knew exactly what this would mean to her cheerleaders The team of 25 students had only been together for two years and had had very little experience

    and was perfect from the line His on the court leadership was also key His maneuvering of his squad s offense helped to both fluster the Panthers as well as bleed much needed time off the clock The difference between the two games was little more than sticking to one simple game plan he said Do the same thing change nothing and play better defense That defense was helped out tremendously by strong under the rim play by Jordan Kelly and Jacob Desersa Both created unfavorable matchups Desersa also scored seven Stuttgart s Noah Layton and Daniel Wetlesen led their team with 13 and 11 points respectively but the rest of the team was unable to get much rhythm going The Panthers said they re not too worried about dropping a game this early in the season It s only the first games of the season so I m not really worried about it We re a great team and we re going to develop That s what happens to good teams said Stuttgart s Joshua Souders Good teams win and lose The girls series was much less a competition The Panthers won convincingly in back to back games On Friday they ran away with the game 62 14 The Tigers fared a little better on Saturday but still fell to the Panthers onslaught 58 17 They re a good team they do play with a lot of heart which is something we also need to do too said Hohenfels Siera Standifer after the game Stuttgart s Marissa Encarnacion had a fantastic showing on both days scoring 11 on Friday and 18 more on Saturday She backed up the scoring binge in Saturday s contest with eight steals and six assists I m proud of the way we played Obviously

    students participating in the annual STEMposium where students use science technology engineering and math to brainstorm solutions to major issues facing the planet In 18 teams of six all named after letters of the Greek alphabet each student has an assigned role There is a biotech engineer a green technology engineer a robotics engineer a marine engineer an environmental engineer and a computer simulations engineer They ve been playing out those roles this week at a hostel in central Germany What engineers do is solve problems using tools and materials You can t do that entirely in your brain or on a computer screen you have to build something said Frank Pendzich of Wiesbaden High School who organized the STEMposium for students from the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Europe So that s why our kids are building submarines or robots and things like that A study published in Science magazine in February showed that the amount of plastic garbage in the ocean equals five plastic bags for every foot of coastline worldwide That s having a growing impact on ocean chemistry and sea life The intellectual energy around the hostel where students are staying for the week is palpable You hear kids during breakfast and lunch and they re all talking about their meetings or you overhear them in the hallway talking about what they re doing and sharing information said Anita Lang an engineering teacher at Lakenheath High School and an adviser for team Zeta They re used to seeing teachers as the experts but now they are seeing each other as the experts Megan Bernard a sophomore from Bitburg High School who plans on a career in medicine said there has been a strong collegial ethic Planning our team building activities has been really fun because we
