    By Tina Ray Paraglide Paraglide Fort Bragg NC November 19 2015 Hampton Primary School Kindergarten teachers Photo Lewis Perkins The Paraglide Kindergarten students of Kimberly Hampton Primary School have been paying very close attention to their surroundings lately Nearly 120 students completed a six week Project Based Learning assignment that required them to create a Town of Fort Bragg picture book said Sarai Maull an HPS kindergarten teacher To do so they had to take note of their homes as well as of the units and landmarks surrounding their homes The picture book includes a likeness of Iron Mike the 17th Calvary Regiment footprint Womack Army Medical Center and neighborhoods such as Hammond Hills Nijmegen St Mere Eglise and Normandy Heights Students used BBOT a programmable robot for collaboration and problem solving skills They built a floor sized model of the town that included a representation of their principal Priscilla Joiner The work enabled students to learn skills relating to 2D and 3D shapes and color recognition As a result of a project like this their students research skills are improved Joiner said The use of BBOT also allowed the students to advance their technological skills added Joiner PBL learning focuses on collecting and analyzing data and creating concrete artifacts such as a model a report or as a computer program The next PBL project will be to create a puppet show about animals and their habitats Maull said Maull s students seem to welcome any project Kamarii Harris 5 said he enjoyed building the school sign for the town replica and likes being in Maull s class She s a nice teacher Harris said Maull said that all projects are a collaborative effort that teachers enjoy citing the work of fellow kindergarten teachers Diane Upton Fumi Marquez Ameenah Johnson
