    DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items Fort Campbell Middle school students collect recyclables to benefit school Earth by Michelle Vowell TheGoldStandard Fort Knox KY December 12 2013 Wassom Middle School eighth grader Drabin Morgan wants to save the planet by recycling one piece of trash at a time If we don t recycle one day our planet is going to be gone and it s going to be our fault said the 14 year old student So I think helping the earth also helps everybody on the earth Morgan and her peers help to preserve the earth through the Fort Campbell Ky school s new recycling program Launched in Septem ber Wassom has partnered with TerraCycle an international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult to recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable innovative products according to terracycle com Our program helps earn money for our school and different charities while keeping unnecessary amounts of trash out of our landfills wrote recycling coordinator Julie Deckard in a letter to Wassom parents The partnership enables students to recycle and keep waste out of landfills while helping Wassom earn easy money for the school Participating in a TerraCycle brigade is totally free There are no signup or participation fees and the shipping is covered by the program It s easy because this fundraiser isn t requiring you to go out and buy a product it s stuff we all use in our house every day Deckard said We just need to make sure they re going to recycling and not to the trash can TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U S and 22 countries overseas to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for

    Procurement Business Opportunities Non DoD Schools Contact Us Facebook Twitter Pinterest Flickr You Tube Search DoDEA Quick Links DoDEA Director Becoming a Teacher Current Vacancies DoDEA Curriculum Newsroom Press Releases Multimedia Media Advisories Publications Downloads DoDEA Celebrates Headlines DoDEA Quick Headlines Back to Previous Page All News Items Fort Knox Knox Youth Gains Resilience by Maureen Rose The Gold Standard Fort Knox KY December 6 2013 The Army s Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness is being met with success in many aspects of Soldiers lives personal and professional However the Fort Knox program has gone a step further by introducing the CSF2 training at the installation high school Sport coaches have been using many of the performance enhancing skills of CSF2 with their teams for several years primarily at the urging of coach Kip Rambo who said it made sense to take advantage of the CSF2 trainers already available at Knox The coach convinced the principal it shouldn t stop with the athletics If it s good for athletes why wouldn t it be good for all our students even those who don t participate in sports could benefit Rambo said With the coach s persistence Fort Knox High School principal Dr Greg Mowen wondered if the program could be broadened further As the staff was preparing for accreditation reviews which is an intense time for them Mowen said they seemed to be less than enthusiastic and he asked about training for the staff since he had heard so much from Rambo about the optimism instilled by the training They contacted Moon Mullins the CSF2 training center manager at Fort Knox about sharing the training with the school s staff The performance enhancement training began in the spring and resilience training was completed in the fall so the entire staff

    30 Although Fort Rucker Elementary School has had a LEGO robotics lab for two years this is the first year the school has created a LEGO robotics team The team competed in its first competition in the first LEGO League Robotics competition During the LEGO League competition there were three challenges for the team to compete in The Robot Game which consists of robot design and an obstacle course challenge The Real World Research Project Challenge and the first LEGO League Core Values Challenge The Fort Rucker team won the Core Values award which is given to the team that exhibits the best core values throughout all aspects of the competition Winning this award says a great deal about the quality and character of our students said Dr Vicki Gilmer Fort Rucker Elementary School principal Each month we focus on an Army core value and we have also focused on improving our problem solving skills To win this award in our first competition was incredible Team member and sixth grade student Abby Morris also said The core values were very important and they show that what we learn is more important than what we win During the competition the students were also given a problem solving challenge task and were judged by how well they problem solve together and work as a team Gilmer said the team learned to appreciate each person s talent as a builder programmer writer and researcher The team also scored 175 points in its final competition obstacle run Each robot is given three separate obstacle course runs and the highest point value is taken Students must analyze the obstacle course program the robot to maneuver through the obstacle course and perform certain tasks as the robot runs the course Prior to the competition the FRES
