  • DoDEA Names Daniele Massey as 2013 Teacher of the Year
    Americas DoDEA Europe DoDEA Pacific DoDEA Names Daniele Massey as 2013 Teacher of the Year For Immediate Release November 7 2012 Connie Gillette 571 372 0607 Daniele Massey ALEXANDRIA VA November 7 2012 The Department of Defense Education Activity DoDEA is proud to announce the selection of Daniele Massey as DoDEA s Teacher of the Year ToY Massey an Algebra I teacher for students at Vilseck High School in Vilseck Germany will represent DoDEA at the National ToY Program Massey is a military spouse and accompanied her husband to Vilseck in 2006 where she was offered her first DoDEA teaching position Prior to moving she taught at Fayetteville Technical Community College in Fayetteville NC She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics and continued her education at Central Missouri State University earning a Master of Science in College Student Personnel Administration We are honored to name Daniele Massey as our DoDEA Teacher of the Year said DoDEA Director Marilee Fitzgerald As a military spouse she is well acquainted with the impact of the unique military lifestyle on the education of our children Fitzgerald lauded Massey s impact in the classroom and said she has changed the lives of thousands of children worldwide Massey was selected as the Bavaria District ToY and was then selected by a panel of DoDEA leadership which included the 2012 DoDEA ToY Angela Wilson Wilson was one of four finalists to be selected to compete for the title of National ToY Massey believes in developing and fostering personal connections with students parents and community members to help students achieve success She co teaches an Algebra I Flipped Mastery Style teaching The flipped classroom is a teaching style where students use the internet videos and reading to receive much of their information at home so class time can be used for student teacher interaction instead of lecturing I want students to take ownership of their learning Massey said Outside of school Massey dedicates her time to volunteering in the community through various events and clubs Massey and her husband Major Adrian Massey have two daughters The DoDEA ToY Program recognizes and promotes excellence in education The ToY competition is the oldest and most prestigious awards program for teachers in the country A project of the Council of Chief State School Officers CCSSO ToY is sponsored by the ING Foundation and Target in partnership with the University of Phoenix and People to People Ambassador Programs The CCSSO is a non partisan nationwide nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states the District of Columbia DoDEA and five U S extra state jurisdictions CCSSO provides leadership advocacy and technical assistance on major educational issues The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations federal agencies congress and the public Teachers may be nominated by a peer administrator parent student

  • DoDEA Names Angela Wilson as 2012 Teacher of the Year
    2012 DoDEA Teacher of the Year Wilson an English and Language Arts teacher at Vicenza Middle School in Italy will represent DoDEA at the national Teacher of the Year celebration to be held in Washington D C next spring She was one of 14 district nominees considered by a panel of DoDEA leaders for the Teacher of the Year title The DoDEA Teacher of the Year Program recognizes and promotes excellence in education Teachers may be nominated by a peer administrator parent student or community member Nominees complete an application packet and submit it to a selection panel at a DoDEA District Office where one applicant is chosen as the District Teacher of the Year A second panel assembled at DoDEA Headquarters then selects the DoDEA Teacher of the Year from the candidates submitted from each district The DoDEA Teacher of the Year competes for the title of National Teacher of the Year With more than 11 years of teaching experience Wilson has taught in public schools in Utah and Illinois and in DoDEA schools in Korea Turkey and Italy She is a 1997 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Western Illinois University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education She also holds a Master s Degree in Education from Southern Utah University Wilson s philosophy and practice of teaching focuses on bringing learning alive According to Wilson her role in the classroom is to meet students at their levels discover their interests and ignite their passion for learning through dynamic creative daily lessons I believe every lesson can and should be exciting engaging and meaningful said Wilson By using formative assessment to guide my instruction and coupling best practices with creativity and differentiation students are engaged in the learning process in challenging and appealing ways I try to appeal to all types of 21st Century learners in my room and do all I can to connect students to the content by incorporating their names the words they use and the songs and shows they like into our language arts classes Wilson continued My students know that I value what they think and when I spark excitement in them and see them become seekers investigators and creators of learning I feel like I ve been successful Marilee Fitzgerald Acting DoDEA Director praised Wilson for her ability to connect her educational beliefs to her students and bring life creativity and enthusiasm to their learning experiences Angela is a wonderful representative of what is best in our teachers and we are honored by her selection said Fitzgerald Three principles and practices underpin Angela s approach to teaching and learning First she connects with students doing whatever it takes to help them grasp ideas and concepts Then she connects with her work to make learning relevant for students Finally she connects to her community by involving community members in school activities The Teacher of the Year Program encourages teachers to take an active part in educational leadership As outstanding educators those

    the process and commit to supporting in a problem solving manner During district selection process Assemble a selection panel in coordination with the Area Point of Contact The interview panel will be responsible for the interview of each district candidate and review of their application see Appendix A The panel may consist of but is not limited to District leadership District TOY school leadership community members union or association members students a representative from the Area office Area POC will coordinate and District POC The District POC will schedule the application review and virtual interview The district panel will need to use the interview process to meet the candidates A combination of the written application and the interview should be used to make the selection The written application and interview rubrics should be used The District Superintendent will be the selection official if there should be a tie based upon the rubrics Send a copy of the rubrics and application of the District TOY recipient to the Area POC prior to the notification to the recipient Note The Area POC should be involved in the District selection process however this step is still considered necessary to ensure on going input and collaboration in the process Coordinate the notification of the recipient of the District TOY to the selected individual Notification should include the application due date and requirements for the DoDEA TOY application The full application should be emailed from the POC along with the notification Send a notification letter to each applicant that was not chosen A draft letter will be provided by HQ During DoDEA TOY application process Assist the District TOY in completing review and edit as needed the DoDEA TOY application sections VII XI of the TOY Application and serve as a liaison to area POC and HQ through the process Submit the complete District TOY s DoDEA application section I XI to the area POC by the deadline A list of Point of Contact emails is attached to this hand book as a point of reference Each District POC a will upload their District TOY application video photo and letters of support to their District folder into TOY Schoology Area Point of Contact Responsibilities Before and during the nomination process Ensure that the TOY Nomination process is promoted and communicated throughout the areas in the following ways but not limited to Collaborate with the District POC to ensure that there is on going communication to schools regarding the process and timeline Collaborate with the District POC to ensure questions about the process are appropriately handled Attend virtual TOY Point of Contact meeting s During district application process selection process Collaborate with District POC to ensure that all nominees within the district have been invited to complete the District TOY Application Ensure Area representation on the district selection panels by coordinating with the district POCs within the area During DoDEA application process Proofread the District TOY national application once it has been submitted to the Area

    been selected as the 2016 Department of Defense Education Activity DoDEA Teacher of the Year 2016 Teacher of the Year Mary Hansen is the STEM teacher at Crossroads Elementary School aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico Virginia She has 20 years of teaching experience with 16 of those years in DoDEA Announcement of the DoDEA Teacher of the Year DoDEA proudly announces the selection of Mrs Mary Hansen as the 2016 Teacher of the Year Mrs Hansen was selected as New York Virginia Puerto Rico s District Teacher of the Year this spring and serves as a Science Technology Engineering Math STEM teacher and instructional coach at Crossroads Elementary School Marine Corps Base Quantico She was selected from the 14 District Teachers of the Year Mary is known as a lifelong learner with an extraordinary passion for teaching learning and leading when working with students teachers parents administrators and stakeholders throughout the community Known for her active engagement of her students Mrs Hansen ignites her students interest in STEM by creating learning opportunities that are challenging meaningful and relevant She believes that teachers must embrace change encourage innovation and foster creativity not just in their students but in themselves She sets high standards continuously rises to difficult challenges and leads and inspires the way for others Mrs Hansen will enter into The National Teacher of the Year program sponsored by the Council of Chief State Schools Officers CCSSO and will be among 56 other participants for the prestigious honor We congratulate Mrs Hansen and all of our 14 District Teachers of the Year for their commitment to their school communities The DoDEA Teacher of the Year Program recognizes and promotes excellence in education The DoDEA teacher advances to compete with teachers from each of the 50 states the District of Columbia
