    edu DoDEA Americas Press Releases 2014 Releases 2013 Releases 2012 Releases 2011 Releases 2010 Releases 2009 Releases 2008 Releases 2007 Releases 2006 Releases All Releases DDESS District News Select a DDESS District GA AL District Kentucky District NC Fort Bragg District NC Camp Lejeune District NY VA Puerto Rico District SC FT Stewart Cuba District DoDEA Headquarters DoDEA Europe DoDEA Pacific Antilles Middle School MATHCOUNTS Students Headed to Nationals For Immediate Release March 30 2015 Antilles MS Cindy Gibson DDESS Public Affairs 678 364 8044 Antilles Middle School Math Team 2015 PEACHTREE CITY March 30 2015 The Antilles Middle School AMS mathematics team from Fort Buchanan Puerto Rico made a strong showing at the Puerto Rico State Finals held March 21 at the Polytechnic University in Hato Ray P R AMS finished second overall in the competition Eighth grader Milton Santiago finished first in the pressure packed Countdown Round defeating his opponent 3 0 in the final round Milton and sixth grader Nico Proskauer both qualified to represent Puerto Rico in the National Competition to be held in Boston the weekend of May 7 Half of the 4 person team is made up of AMS students MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school program that draws over 100 000 participants from the United States and its overseas territories The goal of the program is to engage middle school students of all ability and interest levels in fun challenging math programs in order to expand their academic and professional opportunities The local competition in Puerto Rico is sponsored by the Society of Professional Engineers who provide STEM focused outreach to students at the middle school level When the AMS Mathletes arrive at the Nationals they will face off against 224 of the top math students in America including teams from all 50

    South Korea The office is responsible for media relations internal information programs and communication with students parents teachers school administrators and the public DoDEA Headquarters DoDEA Europe DoDEA Americas For Immediate Release March 5 2015 Pacific Lawrence Torres III Public Affairs Specialist 644 5786 March 5 2015 MISAWA AIR BASE Japan Karen Baker a school nurse with the Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific s Edgren High School was recently selected as the Overseas School Health Nurses Association 2015 School Nurse of the Year MISAWA AIR BASE Japan Edgren High School nurse Karen Baker was recently selected as the Overseas School Health Nurses Association 2015 School Nurse of the Year Photo courtesy of Karen Baker During her 3 years with DoDEA Pacific Baker expanded the vision screening program to include testing for amblyopia color vision deficiency and convergence inefficiency She also provided multiple courses of instruction to school staff members fellow school nurses and students living up to her motto Managing Student Health to Enhance Student Success Ms Baker does an excellent job and we are proud to have her represent the Japan District as the recipient of the OSNHA School Nurse of the Year Award said DoDEA Japan District Superintendent Lois Rapp Edgren High School Principal Georgia Watters said Baker has taken the nurse position to new heights She is kind and compassionate and pays attention to every single detail using her knowledge expertise and initiative to get the job done Most important she loves her job with passion and she loves the students She will stop what she is doing to help anyone in need She really is a very special lady and a special nurse OSHNA is the only professional organization for registered nurses who are employed as school nurses outside of the continental United States The global organization represents members from DoDEA Europe DoDEA Pacific and many international schools The OSHNA School Nurse of the Year is chosen by a special OSHNA committee The committee reviews portfolio submissions for demonstrated excellence in the school nursing practice leadership in school health and promoting the health of school children in the local community I am honored and blessed to be a school nurse and to advocate for the military children that I serve said Baker who has been a nurse for over 34 years Whether I m recognizing and monitoring epidemiological patterns in the school and surrounding community responding to a physical or emotional crisis assessing treating and monitoring students with chronic diseases giving health briefings or making health referrals the ultimate goal is to help students be as healthy as possible so they can achieve academic excellence and become the most independent successful adults possible Baker will be recognized during OSHNA s annual conference taking place in Warsaw Poland April 10 12 For more information on OSHNA and the School Nurse of the Year Award visit http www oshna1 org About DoDEA Pacific The first organized schools for the children of U S military personnel serving in

    United Nations Competition For Immediate Release March 3 2015 W T Sampson ES HS Cindy Gibson DDESS Public Affairs 6780364 8044 W T Sampson MUN Award Winners PEACHTREE CITY GA March 3 2015 In their first time participating and competing in a Model United Nations four W T Sampson Unit School students won awards in the Old Dominion University Model United Nations MUN Conference in Norfolk Va Feb 19 22 2015 W T Sampson School is located at Guantanamo Bay Cuba Fifteen WTSUS students competed in oration resolution writing amending resolutions passing directives and some even wrote and had their own resolutions passed according to David Gertz MUN instructor and advisor We had four students win individual awards which is even more remarkable considering that it was their very first conference and there were over a thousand students participating in the conference said David Gertz The award winners are Tyler Heath Best Delegate Netherlands Cold War Crisis Committee Nelson Arroyo Delegate Best Representing the Spirit of the Committee Book Award Historical Crisis Committee Powhattan Chiefdom Ari Santana Verbal Commendation Cuba Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee Gray Lockwood Verbal Commendation Cuba Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee Tyler Heath earned the very elite Best Delegate Award an award that only 10 delegates out of the over 1000 delegates from across the United States received Model United Nations also known as Model UN or MUN is an extra curricular activity in which students typically role play delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees The hands on learning allows students to confront a range of topics within the perspective of their assigned country or organization Through these experiences during preparation in committee sessions and even in hallway caucuses students develop an appreciation of differing viewpoints the frustration of negotiation the rewards of

  • Competition increases for 2015 DoDEA Pacific “Mathletes”
