    Learning PBL experience where they applied the science of force and motion to their design of a pinewood derby racer During the first half of the PBL unit the students worked with their classroom teacher Mrs Buonanno to complete various inquiry based learning experiences Through these activities these students developed an udn erstanding of the science concepts of friction potential and kenetic energy acceleration center of gravity force motion and aerodynamics For the second half of the unit the students worked with their STEAM teacher Ms Fernandez to design build test improve and race their car Ms Fernandez in partnership with Boy Scout Troop 370 asked the students if they could build a pinewood derby racer that weighs less than 5 ounces and travels the fastest down a track The students followed the Engineering Design Process to come up with a blue print for what their car would look like Then each student was assigned an adult volunteer from the MALS 29 unit to help them cut and sand their wood block down into their car design The 5th grade students then worked with their art teacher to give their car a custom paint job On October 23 the racers showed up for weigh in ready to see if their car would qualify for the race Every student achieved the Boy Scout requiremetns for a Pinewood Derby and their cars were entered into roudn 1 of the race In front of the entire school their families Troop 370 and MALS 29 the students raced head to head down a 32 foot track Students were eliminated based on the speed of their cars with only ha few racers moving on each round until the finals The final two racers lined up at the start line knowing that both were covering the
