    the Dominican community on March 14 ACCA Calculus Competition in which teams of up to three people see who can score the highest on a 90 minute exam Who wants to be a Mathematician A friendly interactive competition held during Dominican s International Week Professor Coe s Advanced Origami demonstration of how to make amazing polyhedra origami For 2013 2014 the KME Math Club officers are Lisa Gullo President Willa Skeehan Co President Azucena Bahena Treasurer Yanyan Chen Secretary Jessica Ferraro Publicity Between research and internship opportunities and honor societies Dominican s Math Department offers a variety of opportunities for students Calculus Competition The Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area ACCA is a consortium of 15 private local liberal arts colleges Each spring ACCA sponsors an annual calculus competition at the campus of one of its member schools Many Dominican math students look forward to the competition as a rewarding challenge each year ACCA member schools usually send a total of 25 30 teams Each team consists of three students and non majors are welcome The competition lasts for 90 minutes and usually consists of approximately 10 short answer questions and 15 multiple choice questions there is a penalty for an incorrect guess on a multiple choice Degree with Distinction As with all Dominican majors and programs mathematics majors can complete their degree with distinction Qualified students apply in the fall of their junior year to Dominican s Degree with Distinction program Degree with Distinction students work with faculty mentors to produce an original creative or critical work which is reviewed by a university wide committee Students who successfully complete the requirements earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Mathematics For 2010 the following graduates completed Degree with Distinction projects Nancy Gullo Exploring Semigroups Readers Aliza Steurer and Marion Weedermann Angelina Myers Exploring Fractal Dimension Through the Analysis of Common Fractals Readers Aliza Steurer and Marion Weedermann Monika Vidmar Confidence Intervals for the Difference of Two Proportions Readers Paul Coe and Cyrus Grant Kim Plesnicar 11 is working on a project towards degree with distinction titled Optimal Strategy for Playing Pass the Pigs Readers Paul Coe and Marion Weedermann Honor Society Dominican is proud to host a chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon the national mathematics honor society The Zeta Chapter has been part of Dominican s campus life since 1967 Kappa Mu Epsilon chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing that offer a strong mathematics major The chapters members are selected from mathematics students and other closely related fields who have maintained standards of scholarship have professional merit and have attained academic distinction Membership is open to students majoring in mathematics or double majoring in mathematics and another field who Have completed at least three semesters of college study Rank in the upper 35 percent of his her class and Have completed at least three college courses in mathematics including at least one semester of calculus and attained an average of B

    broaden students understanding and experience of the languages and the various country s cultures Major Concentrations French Dominican s French major concentrates on the language and cultures of the peoples of France and the Francophone world All courses except FREN 289 Introduction to French Cinema are conducted in French French majors must complete 32 semester hours in the language beyond FREN 201 Intermediate French Required courses focus on Advanced language skills including oral fluency grammar and composition History literature and culture of France and the Francophone world All French majors are encouraged to study abroad during their time at Dominican Students who study at Dominican s program in the beautiful university town of Poitiers France and wish to have these courses count towards the French major must get prior written approval from the French discipline director Italian Dominican s Italian major concentrates on the language and cultures of the people of Italy Advanced courses place particular emphasis on the historical and cultural aspects of Italian language literature Italian majors must complete 32 semester hours in the language beyond ITAL 201 Intermediate Italian Required courses focus on Advanced language skills Italian civilization and culture Literature of Italy All Italian majors are encouraged to study abroad during their time at Dominican Students who study at one of Dominican s programs overseas and wish to have these courses count towards the Italian major must get prior written approval from the Italian discipline director Spanish Dominican s Spanish major concentrates on the language and cultures of the peoples of Spain and the countries of Spanish speaking Latin America Advanced courses place particular emphasis on the historical and cultural aspects of Spanish language literature Spanish majors must complete 32 semester hours in the language beyond SPAN 201 Intermediate Spanish Required courses focus on Advanced language

    Spring Semester 2014 In the past year I have made two of the best decisions of my life the first being to study abroad and the second choosing to come back and do it all over again So much has changed since I took my first layover flight to London and then eventually to my second home in Salamanca Spain Living in a place so different from what I have been accustomed to with a language I barely knew different types of food different customs different way of dress etc and for a long enough time to really acquaint myself and blend in as best as possible has been a once in a lifetime experience On my first day in Spain sitting on the couch in my host family s living room with my new roommate Chris stands as one of the most memorable days of my life Hearing my host family rattle off what I think was Spanish was so overwhelming but also very exciting Looking back on that day little did I know that I would soon become part of their family They have treated me as one of their own and have shared things about their personal lives and the lives of their children and now grandchild that I will never forget Along with having the opportunity to learn Spanish where it originated and to be able to study at the oldest and most prestigious university in Spain the University of Salamanca I have met some of the most amazing people from all different nationalities seen some of the most beautiful sites and architecture and have expanded my cultural knowledge two fold The friends that I have met here in Spain especially the Spaniards have made not only my time here so much more amazing but also
