    shown that binding of the 5 end of the hepatitis C virus HCV genome with micro RNA122 mir 122 significantly enhances viral replication My independent study research project is attempting to determine whether the positive functionality of mir 122 is dependent upon the presence of specific argonaute proteins 1 2 3 and or 4 I am also working to characterize proteins found to bind the 5 end of HCV RNA

    Department of Microbiology UFMG Brazil under the direction of Dr Jônatas Santos Abrahão In the fall of 2012 Rafael joined the Duke Molecular Genetics and Microbiology PhD program and in 2013 he joined the Garcia Blanco laboratory as a graduate student where his broad research goal is to understand host pathogen interactions of Flavivirus Research Interests Viruses of the genus Flavivirus are single stranded RNA viruses that are transmitted by arthropod vectors and especially by ticks and mosquitoes which is the case for the causative agents of dengue yellow fever Japanese B encephalitis Saint Louis encephalitis and West Nile fever Many of these viruses cause high health impacts as is the case for Yellow Fever virus which has an extremely high mortality rate and Dengue virus which infects millions of people every year in many different countries and could be expanding towards the US My broad research interest is to understand molecular host pathogen interactions of the human host with viruses of the Flaviviridae family by using genome wide databases generated at the Garcia Blanco lab to identify host factors that are essential for viral replication More specifically I am currently studying how some ribosomal proteins could be important for
