  • ECU - Sophomore Spotlight
    Dept in the fall of 2010 I took the first levels of painting and ceramics last semester and am currently taking design I II and watercolor A pencil is what I am most comfortable and competent with What I have grown to understand with a pencil the most is the use of value To me it s the subtle changes in value that create my pieces and pencil is the media in which I can manipulate the piece in whatever way I see fit However during my time here I have been exposed to other media and have grown to enjoy them as much as I do pencil and where I used to be a very visual artist I now try to explore more abstract methods and concepts in new media I like to do the best job I can on each piece as far as my talents allow and I love to compete against other artists After I graduate I plan to pursue an MFA Sophomore Spotlight Ruthie Bustamante Artist Statement My life is ever changing and so is the Art I create As an artist I perceive life from another view as most artists do I believe in balance and harmony which is why I recently upon my arrival at East Central University felt a deep connection with sculpture More specifically as an upcoming artist I have found that manipulating clay into an array of ceramic sculptures have satisfied me as an artist I produce figurative non figurative utilitarian non utilitarian and many other authentic forms of hollow sculptures I have many ambitious plans for my future and plan to use the techniques I have and are acquiring in college to complete my journey through life as an artist of integrity and creativity I have gathered that knowing

    ECU Foundation Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center History Mission Planned Giving Service Learning Vision Visitor Welcome Wellness Center more News Events Calendar Campus Updates ECU Journal News News Photo Galleries more Tools Applications Blackboard Login Faculty Staff Directory Faculty Staff Email myECU Portal Password Reset Student Email more Distance Education Blackboard Shell Requests Art Home Art Major Art Teacher Certification Graphic Design Minors School of Fine Arts Home Resources Facilities Studies Art People Department Assessment Events Cool Stuff Student Organizations Our Faculty Scholarships Gallery Profiled Sophomore Spotlight Online Gallery The Horse Project Service Learning L P Smith Webcast EAST CENTRAL STUDENTS WORK ON LARGE SCALE PUBLIC SCULPTURE Students in the Sculpture II class at East Central University have built a large scale silhouette of a horse located in a sculpture park in the 800 block of 12 th Street in the heart of the new Arts District of Ada The sculpture serves as the public sculpture emphasis of the sculpture II curriculum The students Scott Johnson Angela Mackey Mackenzie Miller and Erin Wetherill collaborated with instructor Aaron Hauck on planning maquette construction site location proposal development permitting and the construction of the sculpture The fabrication of the sculpture enhanced the students welding plasma cutting fastening skills and problem solving skills The sculpture measures 27 tall and 19 wide If all goes as planned it will join a small herd of horse sculptures dwelling on hillsides across southern Oklahoma Projects like this are very unusual for undergraduates and would not be possible without the support of Landmark Bank and Mark Landrum Assistance was also provided by the 1120 th Maintenance Company of the Oklahoma National Guard The ECU Physical Plant Fastenal of Ada Dewayne Johnson and Dr Brad Jessop among others The sculpture park is also being developed by Landmark

    The Horse Project Service Learning L P Smith Webcast ECU STUDENTS LOOKING FOR HOUSES IN ARTS DISTRICT IN NEED OF PAINT One house in the new Arts District of Ada East Main Street will be selected each fall to be repainted at no cost to homeowners through a grant East Central University s Art Department has received from Campus Compact a national coalition dedicated to campus based civic engagement The Art Department will use most of the 500 grant to purchase an industrial grade airless paint sprayer Students in ECU s painting classes will complete the exterior painting as a service learning project More than 20 students should start painting the first house shortly after Labor Day on Sept 1 said Dr Brad Jessop chair of the Art Department Since this is one of the department s service learning classes Jessop said it should be ongoing for several years although I think we can only paint one house per academic year The students and the arts district s steering committee will select the homes to be painted The houses must be inside the Arts District an area bordered by Mississippi on the west Francis on the east 9th Street on the north and 14th Street on the south Those who live in the Arts District and are interested in this program should call 580 559 5353 and leave their name and contact information on the voicemail The houses will be power washed scraped and primed Paint will be applied by sprayer brush and roller Jessop said Each project should take several weeks Homes in the area will be repainted in one of several color schemes that coordinate with the overall design guidelines outlined for the district and will reflect the historic nature of the homes in the area Jessop said
