    English Talk b log here for all the latest departmental events and updates Want the latest news on the upcoming 2012 Scissortail Creative Writing Festival Check the blog The Department of English and Languages offers two majors in English along with minors in English English as a Second Language Humanities Oklahoma Studies Russian and Spanish as well as course work in additional languages Students who study English humanities and languages enhance the reading and writing skills important in a variety of careers absorb the cultural understanding necessary for success in a diverse society and develop the critical thinking skills which will lead to professional and advanced academic success The major goal of the programs of study provided by the Department of English and Languages at East Central University is to prepare students for employment as teachers writers editors or for liberal arts positions in business and industry The minor goals of the department s program of study are to offer a sequence of courses in literature writing and language skills mastery of which will lead to an accredited bachelor of arts degree in English and also to prepare teacher certification candidates for the successful completion of the mandatory state examinations In a culture that relies on a literate citizenry the need for training in skilled language comprehension and usage continues to increase To foster such a citizenry as well as to achieve the department s program goals the English department makes a variety of learning opportunities available to its students including classroom lectures and discussions teaching experiences a publications practicum internships as editors of Originals as well as reading writing and research activities East Central University s mission is to foster a learning environment in which students faculty staff and community interact to educate students for life in a rapidly

    students to work with people in a variety of human services agencies and organizations The human service field is one of the most rapidly expanding career fields in America today The multidisciplinary nature of the Department of Human Resources focuses on those careers which require professional preparation and training for services to individuals families groups organizations and communities The Department of Human Resources offers eight undergraduate program options and four graduate options to meet the diverse interest of students pursuing a career in the helping professions Degree programs in the Department include Human Services Counseling with concentrations in Aging Services Human Service Counseling Rehabilitation Counseling and Services to the Deaf The Services to the Deaf concentration is one of only three in the nation and also offers minor in Interpreting which qualifies the student to sit for the State level interpreters certification The Criminal Justice Program offers three concentrations one in Adult Corrections Juvenile Justice and Law Enforcement The Law Enforcement concentration administers the Collegiate Officer Program which prepares students for CLEET certification required by all law enforcement agencies in Oklahoma The Social Work Program is professionally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education CSWE the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the country Our Social Work Program is the only accredited program in Southeast Oklahoma Our Master of Science in Human Resources has four options Two 36 credit hour degree programs Human Resources Administration option and a Criminal Justice option Additionally we have two 60 credit hour degree programs the Counselor option and the Rehabilitation Counselor option Both programs upon completion qualify graduates to sit for the Licensed Professional Counselor exam The Rehabilitation Counselor option program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education CORE which qualifies the graduate to obtain the Certified Rehabiliation Counselor CRC
