  • Alumnus is leader for appropriate classroom technology - Erikson Institute
    Years Tools for Teaching and Learning a book edited by Chip Donohue director of Erikson s TEC Center He expects his second book to be published in 2016 Along the way Puerling collected honors including PBS Teacher s Choice Award from the PBS Innovative Educator Award program and an Early Career Fellowship with the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children s Media at Saint Vincent College Among his other accomplishments are becoming a National Board Certified Teacher the gold standard in teacher certification serving on the Sesame Street Teacher Council and the board of the Chicago Metro Association for the Education of Young Children AEYC and advising the television network Nickelodeon Technology calling Puerling found his calling while teaching preschool at Burley Elementary School a Chicago Public School in the Lakeview neighborhood Technology is deeply embedded in Burley s curriculum as it offers a literature writing and technology magnet program Puerling quickly saw the large role technology could play in providing meaningful and authentic experiences for students He also saw its power to connect students with each other the school community and those outside of their immediate community He began by facilitating video conferences with children s book authors and by asking his students to share with the class the books they had created by projecting the books using a document camera As I tried out different kinds of technology I really noticed the excitement enthusiasm and the ownership of learning that the kids were showing says Puerling I kept delving deeper and deeper into classroom technology trying new things and observing what was most successful at providing students with new experiences and new information Soon he was presenting locally and then nationally and internationally on his insights A lot of people were interested in how to thoughtfully integrate technology into the classroom and in sharing what they d learned with me says Puerling His work was filling a critical gap few teacher preparation programs seriously consider the developmentally appropriate use of technology in the classroom but teachers knew that they needed to understand it Trailblazing work At Catherine Cook School Puerling became the first director of education technology This is a newer kind of position in the entire field of education says Puerling Schools are beginning to realize that IT professionals can t effectively integrate technology in the classroom as they don t have a background in education It really comes down to understanding children and their development how they learn think and process information It s about the child not the technology as technology is just a tool for teaching learning and building relationships and connections Puerling focuses on building teachers skills and confidence He works with them to identify any concerns or barriers to integrating appropriate technologies and helps them set goals for moving forward Puerling models and co teaches lessons with technology and presents strategies to individual teachers and at grade level and faculty meetings To build teacher confidence he also encourages teachers to

  • Fussy Baby Network's FAN tool becomes national model - Erison
    FAN Click to enlarge The FAN which stands for Facilitating Attuned INteractions illustrates core processes in one word Feeling Calming Thinking Doing and Reflecting Each process is centered on parents urgent concern and is designed to support them in the moment Using the model trained practitioners can observe parents and determine where they are on the FAN spectrum and what they most need from listening with acceptance to capacity building The FAN approach also helps practitioners be mindful of their own responses in the moment When you focus on what s important to the parent you can organize your work around that says Gilkerson If a parent s upset or withdrawn and you realize you ve lost them you know to pause pull back and think about what s happening for the parent and how you can reconnect She continues The FAN also interrupts the automatic response of feeling you need to fix a situation right now like a parent needing bus money and helps you build the parent s capacity Healthy families in Illinois and nationwide One key adaptation of the FAN approach is for home visitors trained specialists who visit families homes to provide information and support during pregnancy and early childhood Over the past three years Erikson s Fussy Baby Network has partnered with the Illinois Governor s Office of Early Childhood and with Healthy Families Illinois to develop and implement FAN training for Healthy Families home visiting staff across the state Healthy Families is the largest evidence based home visiting program in the country serving families with children up to five years old More recently the Fussy Baby Network received a 2 2 million grant as part of Illinois competitive Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting program funded through the U S Department of Health and Human Services This will enable the Fussy Baby Network to continue its FAN training in 25 agencies statewide that work with Healthy Families Illinois with a goal for FAN training to be available to all 6 000 Healthy Families America home visitors nationally by 2017 The grant also supports the expansion of the model to two more Illinois home visiting programs Early Head Start and Parents as Teachers Meeting parents where they are The FAN training with Healthy Family Illinois is designed to promote mindfulness and self awareness in home visitors At first home visitors struggled implementing the FAN model says Kate Whitaker national director of training and professional development at Healthy Families America Reflecting on the work was somewhat new to our staff With the support of the Fussy Baby staff our home visitors became more reflective and more comfortable being present for families and attuned to their needs Whitaker says many staff members have shared how much they value the approach as it helps them to see things from a parent s perspective and to see the baby the parent sees The home visitors also report being less stressed as they can be more effective with the

  • Child-Parent Centers expand with private investment - Erikson
    2013 by Utah s Salt Lake County to finance public preschool education In Chicago the social impact bonds cover the operational costs of six new Child Parent Center classrooms in Chicago Public Schools with the city and private partners funding other components of the expansion The city will repay the loans to the three investing organizations only if the program improves student outcomes over the course of 18 years as determined by an independent evaluation We want to lead by example here in Chicago and encourage more investment nationally in high quality early childhood education said J B Pritzker one of the leaders of a national push for early childhood social impact bonds in a City of Chicago press release Changing the lives of as many disadvantaged young children and their families as possible is our ultimate goal As the bonds fund only preschool the schools and other partners are discussing how to maintain Child Parent Center services in kindergarten to third grade Academic success with family involvement What makes the Child Parent Center expansion unique and effective is its combination of intensive educational enrichment and family support services Its six core principles are High quality full day preschool for up to two years in small classes taught by certified teachers Curricula and instructional practices that emphasize language literacy and math skills within a structured activity based approach Comprehensive family services that include involving parents in the Child Parent Center and connecting them to needed resources The services are led by parent resource teachers and school community representatives critical positions that many schools don t have A collaborative leadership team led by the principal and comprised of a head teacher parent resource teacher and school community representative Continuity and stability from preschool to third grade with curriculum alignment and parent involvement Students are also assured continued enrollment in the Child Parent Center even if they move within the school district Ongoing professional development created and facilitated by Erikson and implemented by school based Child Parent Center staff Erikson brings directly to the schools its unique approach to preparing early childhood professionals including a developmentally informed approach to children and families research proven teaching practices cultural responsiveness relationship building and ongoing critical self reflection All the content aligns with Common Core State Standards state learning standards and performance standards for educators In collaboration with Erikson we have created a comprehensive professional development system that has never existed in the Child Parent Center program says expansion project director Arthur Reynolds of the Human Capital Research Collaborative at the University of Minnesota The best practices for online training and on site facilitation we ve created will live far beyond the life of the project Motivated to learn In Illinois s Evanston Skokie School District 65 which launched its four Child Parent Centers in 2012 as part of the i3 funded expansion early childhood coaches Samantha Richardson and Charlise Berkel implement the Erikson professional development modules Each semester they meet with Child Parent Center

  • Erikson-DCFS partnership supports youngest in welfare system
    the youngest children and we couldn t have done it without Erikson Warriors for children Today the DCFS Early Childhood Project at Erikson consists of 27 early childhood specialists employed by Erikson who work statewide to determine what services are needed to address the developmental and emotional concerns of children birth through five who are in the care of or who are being closely monitored by the child welfare system Erikson s developmental specialists also administer developmental screenings to all children ages birth through three entering the foster care system in Cook County with the aim of identifying and referring at risk children to the Early Intervention System In 2014 the project served 7 246 children across the state from 6 453 families The work is far from easy given complicated state policies and the emotional toll of working with troubled children and families but that doesn t discourage the Early Childhood Project specialists Andria Goss M S 02 I tell my team that we re warriors in the field says Andria Goss M S 02 an Erikson staff member who became the director of the Early Childhood Project in 2000 The role of this project is to help take better care of young children who are in the care of the DCFS system in Illinois We are the only ones in child welfare who do what we do and we deliver It matters that Erikson is a leader and has a specific knowledge base of child development I get people to listen to me by just saying Erikson Focus on the child In Illinois and particularly in Cook County young children come into foster care at rates considerably higher than the national average and stay in foster care longer The foster care system emphasizes safety and permanency that is the priorities are no continued abuse or neglect and returning the child to the family The Early Childhood Project also encourages a much needed focus on the child s well being The majority of children removed from their parents in Illinois are placed in a relative s care Goss says But many relatives have had the same life experiences as the parent so the outcomes may not be much different According to Goss rather than just achieving a safe foster placement there needs to be a good match for the child with a committed caregiver not necessarily a relative Young children are people with their own inner lives she says We need to understand what the child has experienced and what support the child needs and not focus on any safe placement Supporting at risk families In 2010 Goss approached DCFS about the need to do more work with families who had an open case with the department but whose children were not removed These families who may face a range of challenges including incidences of abuse or unaddressed mental health problems are offered but not obligated to receive services They may have had two or three cases that were
