    would not otherwise see I don t know of any other EMT programs that are fortunate enough to have the cadaver lab experience that was so graciously provided by Dr Aylesworth and Dr Goff at Ferrum College said Newman It s a greater opportunity than any video or in class lecture would be able to offer The labs can also inspire the students to further their education in healthcare or create curiosity in an area they once never considered The chance to see and work with human cadavers is rare and none of the high school students had seen a cadaver before In fact seeing and working with a cadaver is an uncommon experience for most undergraduates as well Very few undergraduate institutions especially small liberal arts institutions have any cadavers much less five said Dr Goff Additionally our students get the chance to not only see the cadavers but do the dissections themselves We often hear back from our graduates who are in post baccalaureate health related programs that they are one of a couple students at most in their class who has worked with a human cadaver Dr Goff asked the Minds N Medicine Club students to help show off the cadavers and do some teaching for the EMT class visit I did this for two reasons explained Dr Goff I wanted the high school students to be able to talk to real college students to find out what college was like and I also believe that the Ferrum students benefited from an enhanced understanding of anatomy by having to teach it at an age appropriate level A paramedic firefighter and EMT instructor for Franklin County Newman has been teaching the EMT class for five years to high school students interested in emergency medical services or other healthcare

    Under the new program which will be under the management of the Franklin County YMCA area residents will be able to use the facility once they purchase a YMCA membership Ferrum College is providing memberships to students faculty and staff and dependents as part of the tuition and employee benefit packages Plans call for an expansion of 3 900 square feet Fitness equipment and changing areas will be added to the facility and the current space will be re configured to maximize usage It is anticipated that a number of YMCA group exercise classes will also be offered The building already includes two full sized gymnasiums which will occasionally be reserved for intramural sports and campus events such as concerts We have enjoyed tremendous success with our Tri Area Commission Community Health Center and pharmacy located on campus said Ferrum College President Dr Jennifer L Braaten Braaten pointed out that many of the people using the health center are members of the local community We want to be a resource for the people of Franklin County said Braaten Joining forces with the YMCA is the perfect way to enable the community to have access to our facilities It will also enhance education by providing great opportunities for our faculty and students in Ferrum s Health and Human performance curricula to interact with the community and different age groups she said The YMCA is so much more than a place to work out said Jeanne Martin president of the Franklin County YMCA board of directors We look forward to the opportunity of taking the YMCA s mission of social responsibility youth development and healthy living to people in the western portion of Franklin County who previously were not served by the Y she said YMCA Executive Director Garry Angle agreed saying

    County Later in the season the Jack Tale Players will give a number of free public performances First will be a production presented by Grayson County Public Library on June 14th in Independence Next Hollins University will include a Jack Tale Players performance on July 16th at 7 30 p m in the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center Auditorium as part of the University s summer events The Hollins production will be immediately followed with two performances on July 17th sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin County Library The first will be at the main library in Rocky Mount at 10 a m The second will be at Westlake Library at 3 p m Founded by R Rex Stephenson in 1975 the Jack Tale Players perform Appalachian folklore and music primarily dramatizing Blue Ridge Mountain stories about a boy named Jack and his adventures A mountain family band performs music before during and after the stories Instruments include the fiddle guitar mandolin banjo harmonica spoons Limber Jack a washtub bass and sometimes an oboe To date the Jack Tale Players have performed nearly 3 000 shows for three quarters of a million children and adults in 34 states and

    as an address by Hampden Sydney College President Christopher B Howard A lunch for graduates and their guests immediately followed the ceremony What a wonderful day this is as we join together as members of the extended Ferrum family to celebrate the achievements of the class of 2012 said President Jennifer Braaten We are proud of their success and the contributions they have made to the College and the community during their years at Ferrum Awards presentations followed Dr Braaten s remarks and greetings from Board of Trustees Chairman Sam Lionberger Jr Among the award recipients two noted Ferrum alumni brothers Charles G Menefee 42 and Richard L Menefee 43 each received the Benjamin M Beckham Medallion Ferrum s highest alumni honor The Menefees who exemplify the Ferrum College motto Not Self But Others were honored for their service to church family and for their loyalty to the College During his keynote address Dr Howard advised the graduates of five Be s Be your own best self Be humble Be accountable Be courageous he said illustrating the importance of each Be with stories from his life s experience Dr Howard finished his speech with the final Be Be the change in the world you want to see In speaking of his fellow students experiences senior class speaker William Moore noted that at times their life journeys were jostled by difficult and tragic events However he said We are like a forest We must be resilient Moore closed his speech with words from the poem Song of Open Road by Walt Whitman Graduates also participated in a traditional Baccalaureate service on Friday evening in Vaughn Chapel The service concluded with a candlelight ceremony at Hart International Plaza to symbolize the light of knowledge that the new graduates will carry forth into

    athletes burst through a tape and ran onto the field in front of the HNC to the beat of a rousing fight song played by the Franklin County High School marching band This is a thrilling day for Ferrum said President Jennifer Braaten Student athletics has been an important part of our history and mission This new facility is a much anticipated addition to campus and will benefit the entire College community for decades to come Named for Hank Norton award winning legendary former football coach and athletic director the HNC includes a training facility featuring the latest technology for the treatment and prevention of injuries a weight room locker rooms staff offices and a large classroom It s wonderful to see just how far the athletic program has come said Norton who led Ferrum to acclaim with four national football championships during its junior college years Athletic Director Abe Naff calls the HNC a game changer Naff noted that it will give us the opportunity to better recruit students who want to continue their athletic careers after high school Today s students are looking for this type of facility when they choose their college Kim Blair Vice President for Institutional Advancement thanked everyone who contributed to the successful fundraising effort We would not have this wonderful building for our student athletes if not for the generosity of our dedicated alumni loyal friends and our Board of Trustees she said Bobby Thompson Senior Vice President for Administration noted the tremendous economic benefit of the HNC to the Ferrum community and surrounding areas Frith Construction of Martinsville was the general contractor for the Hank Norton Center and used local and regional subcontractors and suppliers during the 1 ½ year building process It s wonderful to realize that this project which will

    University Johnson worked the past two weeks at Clemson with head coach Brad Brownell before being lured back to Virginia Tech A 1993 graduate of Ferrum Johnson lands his first head coaching position after 20 years as an assistant coach Virginia Tech competes in one the top basketball conferences in the nation the Atlantic Coast Conference Johnson played at Ferrum for then Head Coach Bill Pullen helping the Panthers win Dixie Conference now the USA South regular season titles in 1992 and 1993 In 1992 Johnson helped the Panthers win the Dixie Tournament and make the College s first and only trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament He was a standout defensive player drawing the assignment of guarding opponents top player every night Johnson made his coaching debut in 1994 as Pullen s assistant coach and helped lead the Panthers to the 1995 Dixie regular season title Johnson left Ferrum after that season to take an assistant coaching position at Longwood University From there Johnson s coaching stops included Hargrave Military Academy 1996 97 Old Dominion University 1997 2000 Elon University 2000 02 College of Charleston 2002 03 Penn State 2003 05 George Mason 2005 07 and Virginia Tech
