    the first national Greek letter society on its campus Colonized from the once local sorority Zeta Theta Epsilon the Gamma Mu Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon was chartered on November 12 2011 Delta Phi Epsilon s mission is to develop in women a social consciousness and a commitment to think and act for the greater good Dedicated to supporting this mission Ferrum s Gamma Mu Chapter is involved in many philanthropic projects that support a variety of organizations including those that fight eating disorders breast cancer diabetes hunger and cystic fibrosis Delta Phi Epsilon was founded in 1917 by five women at New York University Law School making it one of the first non sectarian social sororities and the only one founded at a professional school In 1922 Delta Phi Epsilon extended into Canada to become an international sorority Today s Delta Phi Epsilon chapters and their more than 50 000 members enjoy a distinguished reputation for scholarship service and leadership Collegiate fraternities are a North American institution Since 1776 when Phi Beta Kappa originally a social fraternity was founded Greek Letter Societies have existed to serve the student and the host college or university Information For Future Students Accepted

    in Franklin County Ferrum SIFE Team members Marcus Burwell Christina Mannino and Caitlin Swan will utilize a HSBC North American Financial Education for Small Business grant to help Foster s Country Market and Green House with web site creation staff financial training and improving computer skills for inventory tracking This project is very important to me because the economy these days is rapidly moving which doesn t allow small businesses with lower income such as Foster s Produce to catch up with the appropriate technology for their business said Mannino I am very privileged to be able to help rebuild and restore the company to its main purpose of selling locally grown fresh produce For her WalMart Empowering Women project Ferrum College senior psychology major Vinsetta MacDaniel will work with the Family Resources Center to help women who are in or have been in abusive relationships learn to make their own decisions get additional education find a job and set up their own businesses Senior accounting major and women s basketball team captain Kristen Keith will use a Sam s Club Step Up for Small Business grant to work with two cabinet shops to help them improve their financial performance as well as assist them with their efforts to operate more sustainably through recycling reduction of energy use and sourcing woods from sustainable forests Our SIFE team is now in its twenty third year and has a good success record of community involvement said Ferrum College Business Professor Dr Demetri Tsanacas who started Ferrum s SIFE program in 1988 Small businesses are the backbone of Franklin County and the United States and we need to do all that we can to make sure they survive and prosper SIFE is an international collegiate program designed to encourage the top leaders of

    Better World Books Library Discards Donation Program which will help the library manage its book collection while generating a new source of revenue With its Library Discards Donations Program Better World Books collects discarded and donated books from more than 900 libraries nationwide and resells them through numerous online marketplaces Through this and other programs Better World Books has raised well over 10 million dollars for global literacy and libraries and reused or recycled 80 million pounds of books The whole philosophy of Better World Books and what they are trying to do fits so well with the programs and goals of Ferrum College perhaps with environmental awareness and literacy ranking at the top said Head of Technical Services Peggie Barker who is enthusiastic about the new partnership Stanley Library typically receives several donations of books each school year and this gives us an avenue for sharing titles that we don t add to our collection Barker who recently sent a second book shipment to Better World Books notes that any revenue received from the sale of these books will be invested in new titles for Stanley Library Information For Future Students Accepted Students Current Students President s Welcome Alumni

    purchases in the past year This grant will allow us to continue making significant improvements to the science facilities used to educate all students at Ferrum College particularly those in the health and pre professional sciences In making the award the Tobacco Commission praised Ferrum College for providing opportunities to young people in central and southwest Virginia Ferrum is an asset to our region and has been a good partner with the Tobacco Commission as we have worked to have more high school students from the region attend college and hopefully return to help revitalize our communities said Sen Frank Ruff of Clarksville Ferrum College Vice President of Institutional Advancement Kim Blair complemented the commission for its insight We appreciate the depths to which the Commission went in determining the recipients of this funding There are many worthy organizations in which they could have placed their faith and funding and we are so pleased the commissioners chose Ferrum College she said The grant would be used to update three specific laboratories chemical synthesis cell and molecular biology and microbiology and to purchase a scanning electron microscope Additional College funds are being allocated to expand the instructional capacity of the facility Construction will begin in the spring semester About Ferrum College Ferrum College is a four year private co educational liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges About the Tobacco Commission The Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission is a 31 member body created by the 1999 General Assembly to promote economic growth and development in tobacco dependent communities using proceeds of the national tobacco settlement To date the Commission has awarded 1 475 grants totaling more

    the College of Education s annual Alumni Society Awards Banquet held in October Walters received a bachelor of science degree in secondary education with an English teaching option in 1971 and a master s of education degree in counseling and student personnel in 1972 both from Penn State At Ferrum College Walters provides leadership for an inclusive career services office that focuses on career planning and the employment search process for approximately 1 500 students He also plans and conducts a career week program for students which includes faculty staff and community involvement In addition he teaches two or more classes annually A Pottsville Pa native Walters who currently lives in Roanoke Va previously worked in many positions which include director of the Career Services Center at Radford University for 18 years a consultant for AT T and a career counselor at Wytheville Community College He served in the military for five years during the Vietnam War era and advanced to Top Secret security clearance in the U S Navy He is a member of many organizations and has received many honors and awards A highlight of his career was being one of nine career services directors from across the U S selected to participate in the Fulbright Scholarship to Germany in 2007 While abroad he learned about the German higher education system and was able to share goals and outcomes with international colleagues James McBride Jr a friend and colleague for over 20 years said of Walters He worked diligently and with limited resources for many years to develop an outstanding career services operation at Radford University He has dedicated hundreds of hours of his time to the further development of our profession through his work in state and regional associations Rol has trained numerous graduate students who have
