    business executives to campus Each academic year four distinguished and influential business leaders will be invited to share their experiences skills and real world business expertise E Michael Mutchler retired from General Motors Corp GM after more than four decades of service He served as Vice President and Group Executive in charge of GM s North American Operations Powertrain Group and as a member of both GM s North American Strategy Board and the GM International Strategy Board Mutchler as well as the other executives who come to campus will hold two lecture sessions one in the afternoon the other in the evening Evening sessions will be held at 7 p m in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room in Franklin Hall It is free and open to the public In addition to the lecture sessions executives will also visit with students during classes and dinners Select groups of students such as some members of Students in Free Enterprise SIFE as well as some Bonner Scholars will be invited to attend private receptions with each guest For more information about Mutchler s upcoming visit contact the Corporate Relations Office at 540 365 4218 Information For Future Students Accepted Students Current Students

    include a test of several campus emergency components including the college s mass notification system ferrume2campus and the campuswide siren system The college s siren system is stationed on the north side of campus and will sound for exactly 1 minute In the event of an actual emergency situation that day the campus and surrounding community would hear the siren for three minutes or longer The sirens will be coupled with a test of the College s mass notification messaging system which was implemented in April of 2007 The system called ferrume2campus enables Ferrum to send important campus information to students staff parents and faculty wherever they are In addition to cell phones ferrume2campus enables the college to send messages to users via web pages RSS PDA e mail text pager google AOL or My Yahoo page In addition to the campus siren and mass notification system the college plans to also send test messages via campus e mail the campus website www ferrum edu and its phone information line 540 365 5555 Information For Future Students Accepted Students Current Students President s Welcome Alumni Friends and Donors Faculty and Staff Visitors Student Calendar Campus Safety Procedures Title IX Information

    2004 when Ferrum President Jennifer Braaten first initiated an enrollment strategy of improved facilities better communication with prospective students and a strong academic plan We offer our students an exceptionally welcoming campus environment state of the art technology comfortable living and study spaces and a broad array of curricular and extra curricular activities says Braaten and we have an outstanding group of faculty administrators and staff who are committed to student success and to helping ensure that our young men and women have the best college experience possible The College opened the academic year with new and enriched programs in areas such as environmental planning and development graphic design eco tourism and musical theatre These offerings along with popular majors in environmental science the second oldest program in the country business administration criminal justice teacher education and pre professional science comprise a vigorous academic program that draws prospective students and culminates in well prepared graduates with multiple career and graduate school choices On the extracurricular side a new men s lacrosse team is being added to the extensive list of NCAA Division III sports offered at Ferrum Playing field enhancements ensure that Ferrum student athletes enjoy competing on some of the best fields and courts in Division III Ferrum s continuous improvements to its academic and athletic programs go hand in hand with new and updated facilities Several apartment style residence halls have been constructed in the last three years The north wing of Bassett Hall Ferrum s largest residence hall underwent renovation during the summer A Papa John s restaurant will open soon in the food court area of Franklin Hall next to the popular Subway Restaurant We continue to upgrade our offerings to give our students what they need says President Braaten At Ferrum we have been fortunate

    biology has received a 100 000 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to study the gene structure of certain bacteria The funding will enable students to gain research experience in microbiology and molecular biology as they study gene regulation in a harmless bacterium that is closely related to the pathogenic bacterium linked to tuberculosis The data we obtain from studying the genes in one bacterium can be extrapolated to gene regulation in the tuberculosis bacterium thereby giving students the opportunity to study a pathogen of great public health significance in a safe setting using a non pathogenic bacterium Gazdik said The three year grant will give students an opportunity to participate in independent research projects and scientific research conferences around the country The grant is an Academic Research Enhancement Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases NIAID a division of the National Institute of Health The title of the grant is Elucidating cAMP signaling in Mycobacterium smegmatis Information For Future Students Accepted Students Current Students President s Welcome Alumni Friends and Donors Faculty and Staff Visitors Student Calendar Campus Safety Procedures Title IX Information Related Pages Ferrum College News Ferrum Magazine Online Iron

    increases biodiversity and land holder incomes Hurt serves on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors where he has led successful initiatives such as the Franklin County Trails and Blueways Plan and a Purchase of Development Rights ordinance With a multi dimensional perspective as a landowner elected official and conservation professional Hurt also works as easement director of Conservation Partners in an effort to assist landowners throughout the conservation easement process September 17 Mr Steve Prisley is an associate professor of forest inventory and geographical information systems GIS in Virginia Tech s College of Natural Resources He has received a certificate commemorating his involvement with the International Panel on Climate Change IPCC which received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize along with former Vice President Al Gore Prisley s contributions included lead authorship of Afforestation Reforestation and Deforestation ARD Activities part of an International Panel on Climate Change Special Report entitled Land Use Land Use Change and Forestry October 8 Ms Heather Dawes is Executive Director of Energy Xchange a multi use facility that demonstrates different uses of alternate energy sources through environment education and economic development Dawe s lecture will coincide with a major exhibition at Ferrum s Elizabeth Taylor Greer Art Gallery in Stanley Library Sustainability Trash to Treasure Ceramic and Glass Work from the Energy Xchange Studios The exhibition will feature glass and ceramic artwork produced using landfill gas captured from the 7 acre mountain landfill adjacent to the studio property The exhibition will also be open to the public October 29 Ms Janisse Ray leading environmental activist author and poet and recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellowship November 5 Dr Jeb Barret t is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech Much of his research is conducted in polar desert ecosystems of
