of the program This requires Bio Safety Level 3 lab clearance and training along with FBI clearance Needless to say there are many job hazards and it is very tedious work but it is also very rewarding In a few years I will begin veterinary school specializing in Food Animal Medicine and graduate in 2020 with a Ph D and a D V M Combining these degrees and the careers they offer fuels my passion for science and medicine that was molded at Ferrum College Science explains life while medicine sustains it I hope to take these degrees and work at the Center for Disease Control the World Health Organization the Military or the Government None of this would have bee n possible without the career I had as an undergraduate at Ferrum College The success of many of my classmates friends and myself shows that Ferrum is well equipped to prepare students to reach their goals Ferrum faculty members pour their lives into the students and the students pour themselves into each other The Ferrum community not only brings a new chapter to life but also provides the foundation for successful futures The dedication of the faculty and staff produced great networking alliances and unique opportunities that made my story a success I would not have been able to make it this far without the hands on training knowledge and faculty investment that I received at Ferrum The students that I work with here in graduate school recognize and comment on how well prepared I am I have noticed others struggle with their lack of development and it is nice to know that I am ready for what is expected of me at this level Ferrum s educational environment is rich in opportunities for leadership development hands on training

competency and professionalism of the professors were outstanding With the encouragement from my advisor I found new interests and ways to become successful while helping others The education and experience that I gained from Ferrum s Social Work Program allowed an easy smooth and quite rewarding transition for me to start my career I began searching for jobs before I graduated and I did not have to even think about who I would use as a reference because several of the staff members were more than happy to allow me to put them down as a reference Before I graduated I was offered a job through my internship The amount of experience that I gained while being at Ferrum truly did prepare me for the position I hold today I am a Child Protective Services Investigator I am trained to recognize and work with abused and neglected children I am also certified to ensure the safety of children in an attempt to further protect them from abuse and neglect While I was at Ferrum I found myself Some people may say that is cliché but it s the truth Ferrum College introduced me to a new life It was home From the beautiful colors in the fall to the snow falling in February that would always somehow melt just in time for classes not to be cancelled to the beautiful springtime that was just always amazing I never witnessed a more beautiful campus that I could truly call home The memories I created while at Ferrum will never leave my heart The experience you have while attending Ferrum College is just like life it s all about what you make it Any college will bring memorable times but when you have so many support systems and you can consider the

teaching During my first year at Ferrum I had Dr Bob Pohlad as an instructor in biology and his influence helped to determine my decision to pursue a career in education and major in biology Since Ferrum is a smaller school I had several of the same professors in the science department for multiple classes and it was great to get to know and be mentored by such wonderful and intelligent people I also had a wonderful experience in the athletic program at FC I played volleyball for 3 years and softball for 4 Within those years there were awards and wins that I will never forget but most of all I appreciate the friends that I made and the challenges that I had to overcome I was a stronger person after my years as a college athlete I will never experience any level of competition more exhilarating than college athletics Ferrum s athletic family is very supportive and once you become a part of it you never lose it One person in particular who made my experience at Ferrum unforgettable was the softball coach Vickie Van Kleeck She sacrificed so much for her players that no one could ever thank her enough I feel honored to have been mentored by this lady for so many years I can say without hesitation that Ferrum s education department prepared me for the job that I do today I am in my second year of teaching science in North Carolina s public school system There is nothing that can completely prepare a future teacher for having your own class except experience Ferrum s education program gave me that experience through internships and student teaching allowing me to be in the classroom setting as much as possible I had the opportunity to be

classmate of mine inquired about possible internships with the company Luckily for me the answer was yes That summer I served as an intern and assistant to the entire administrative staff They allowed me time with production sales and accounting so I could get a taste for what the company did on a daily basis After graduating from Ferrum I accepted a job offer with the company I was hired to go into sales specifically for the food packaging business Some of my daily tasks include performing market research product development customer relationship management handling trademarks for our products and general business development The most challenging aspect of the job is learning how an entire ecosystem of products competitors suppliers and brokers interact with one another to form the industry If given the chance to go back and change my four years at Ferrum College I would not change a thing I was hesitant at first to attend such a small college so far away from my native state of Arizona I decided to give it a go because it was a different experience from the ones my closest friends were getting at larger four year institutions I never looked back I played 1 on the Panther tennis team all four years and I was team captain for three of them I was employed through sports information which was another integral part of my time at Ferrum I got hands on experience with running sporting events managing websites and creating a good experience for spectators These skills that Ferrum provided me were directly transferable to the professional world Last but not least I have to say that working with such a talented group of coaches professors administrators and staff prepared me for anything I have to face on a daily
