  • Irrera Brothers to Perform Spring Concert April 7 at Ferrum College
    the United States and abroad The New York Concert Review cited their 2013 concert in Carnegie Hall as a riveting and dynamic performance Joseph and John have also performed at Lincoln Center the Kennedy Center the Eastman Theatre and internationally throughout France Germany Italy and Costa Rica In addition to their duo collaboration Joseph and John are also celebrated soloists Joseph a Steinway Artist has appeared with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and performed with conductors including Leonard Slatkin and Christopher Seaman John has also appeared as soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and has collaborated with notable musicians such as Michael Tilson Thomas Peter Oundjian and composer Tan Dun Joseph and John have won numerous national and international competitions both as soloists and as the Irrera Brothers Highlights from the Irrera Brothers 2014 2015 Concert Season include appearances at Atlanta s Spivey Hall the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas at the MTNA National Conference Eastman s Hatch and Kilbourn Halls and Steinway Hall in Dallas Texas with members from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra In May of 2014 the brothers graduated from the Eastman School of Music with their Doctor of Musical Arts degrees and are on the artist

    17 2015 in Charlottesville Va Fredericksen who was recognized for her work as a jewelry artisan was also selected for 3rd place in the People Choice Awards at the Conference The Artisans Center of Virginia ACV annually celebrates and honors the accomplishments of individuals from across the Commonwealth who exemplify outstanding craftsmanship and who are working to make a difference on behalf of Virginia s Artisans The Virginia Juried Master Artisan award is presented to ACV juried artists in Virginia that have attained a high level of expertise and professional recognition and whose work demonstrates extreme excellence in both design and craftsmanship with a total competency and control of their medium Community involvement through education and mentorship also define the role of the Virginia Juried Master Artisan as each seeks to pass on their talent and or trade to the next generation In addition to perpetuating their trade to future generations and preserving their stylistically unique contributions to Virginia s artisan culture and heritage each becomes an Artisans Center of Virginia endorsed resource for information and technical expertise in their field Fredericksen whose Sugar Grove Studio is in Ferrum Va is a custom design goldsmith specializing in one of a kind creations a functional and decorative potter and stained glass artist who has pursued her craft for more than 25 years She serves on the boards of Round the Mountain Southwest VA Artisan Network The Blue Ridge Potters Guild and the Nature Camp Foundation Fredericksen teaches a series of metalsmithing classes at the Jacksonville Center for the Arts in Floyd Va and stained glass classes at the Rocky Mount Center for the Arts She is also one of the multidisciplinary faculty teaching the Holocaust course at Ferrum College For more information visit www nellfredericksen com Share Information For Future Students

  • Ferrum College and YMCA to Host Colorful Fundraiser April 11
    on both themselves and their clothing The colored chalk is actually non toxic cornstarch that is 100 safe for people and the environment Ferrum College junior Logan Hodges co event director and organizer of the two previous Put Cuffs on Cancer 5k events has high expectations for the race this year To exemplify Ferrum College s motto Not Self But Others we aim to raise a significant amount of money to be split between the Franklin County Family YMCA and a Ferrum College scholarship for a student affected by cancer We are pleased to be able to keep all of the proceeds local in order to help out our own campus and our surrounding community Ferrum YMCA Branch Director and Co event Director Chris Rill notes that the YMCA coordinates several events throughout the year to help raise funds for its lifeline assistance program that last year alone made over 200 000 to supplement families with everything from healthy living programs to after school care For years the Y has done several great races in Rocky Mount and Smith Mountain Lake so we are going to build on that momentum and offer a truly unique experience with this race We had a great turn out the past two years and this year should be just as good We are beating prices of similar races in the area by 20 or more per person he said Our county is a really special place and at the Y we believe that residents deserve not only the best wellness facilities family activities and childcare programs but amazing special events like this one The college is a great partner for our Y and really understands how vital our services are said Rill About Ferrum College Founded in 1913 Ferrum College provides life long learning
