  • Ferrum College Theatre Arts to Present Absurd Person Singular
    and February 1 at 2 p m The tragi comedy documenting the changing fortunes of three married couples will be performed on the Sale Theater stage in Schoolfield Hall Tickets are 10 for adults and 8 for seniors and students outside the college Admission is free to all Ferrum College faculty staff and students with current ID Non perishable food donations to the St James Community Center Food Bank will be accepted Absurd Person Singular chronicles the dysfunctional interactions among three couples the audience sees and one couple it doesn t on three successive Christmases in three acts Each act takes place at a Christmas celebration full of character comedy and drama at one of the couples homes The first Christmas focuses on what should be the perfect party of the season but instead turns into a comic disaster for those who live for the proper and dignified The second is a disaster from beginning to end that puts the disintegration of a couple front and center The final Christmas brings all three couples together into an ironically funny thought provocative situation The play has made audiences laugh then think then regret the laughter in three successful Broadway revivals over the last forty years This production is designed to be entertaining yet thought provoking There are themes that examine the raw but realistic nature of relationships through absurd and ironically funny situations said Professor and Coordinator of Theatre Arts and Director of Performing and Visual Arts Operations Wayne Bowman The cast and crew have worked hard to understand and interpret the play to give audiences food for thought Absurd Person Singular contains adult language and themes that may not suitable for younger audiences For more information contact Wayne Bowman at wbowman ferrum edu Share Information For Future Students Accepted Students

  • Hammock, Pannill and Shepley Awarded Future Farmers of America Degrees
    1 2014 in Louisville Ky The highest award that can be earned by a member the FFA Degree is given based upon a student s development of practical knowledge and skills during Supervised Agriculture Experience activities as well as their demonstrated willingness to promote the agriculture industry in the future Approximately 3 500 members are presented FFA Degrees each year representing less than half of one percent of all FFA members In addition to active participation in the National FFA Organization and the College s agriculture programs Hammock Pannill and Shepley are involved in Collegiate Young Farmers activities through the Virginia Farm Bureau Hammock represents the Gretna FFA Chapter in Gretna Va Pannill represents the Eastern View FFA Chapter in Culpeper Va and Shepley represents the Millbrook FFA Chapter in Winchester Va The National FFA Organization was formed in 1928 to provide networking opportunities for young men interested in agriculture Today the National FFA Organization is one of the largest youth organizations with a membership of more than 610 000 young men and women As FFA members students have the opportunity to promote premier leadership personal growth and career success Students can also earn numerous degrees based on their accomplishments

  • Ferrum College Invited to White House College Opportunity Day of Action
    STEM Ferrum College s participation in the Day of Action includes two areas The College s new Ask Me 1 st initiative to promote retention already underway this semester can begin even before accepted students enroll at Ferrum Ask Me 1 st provides first generation at risk underserved students with clearly defined and integrated access to multiple support services and extra assistance from faculty and staff in developing the skills to aid in successfully navigating the college experience aspects of which can be daunting to this student population Another planned action is Focus on STEM that will recruit underrepresented first generation or other at risk students into an intensive two week bridge program prior to the start of the academic year Credit will be given for the program that will be facilitated by faculty in the STEM areas with the goal of inspiring students to consider the challenging and rewarding career paths in these fields Ferrum is also part of the Yes We Must coalition a group of colleges with similar missions who are committed to increasing college enrollment and student success It was a tremendous experience to be in Washington DC and represent Ferrum College as part of this important day said Dr Braaten Ferrum s mission of opportunity accessibility and affordability is directly in keeping with President Obama s ideas for actions to help the kind of students who have long been served by Ferrum throughout our evolutionary history Expanding opportunity for more students to enroll and succeed in college especially low income and underrepresented students is vital to building a strong economy and a strong middle class Today only 9 percent of those born in the lowest family income quartile attain a bachelor s degree by age 25 compared to 54 percent in the top quartile In
