  • Darwin Expert Dr. Duncan Porter to Speak at Ferrum College March 21
    public A leading scholar of the classification of flowering plants the history of biology and Charles Darwin Porter served on the faculties of the University of San Francisco Washington University and Virginia Tech In addition he collected and wrote about plants from Canada to Chile Morocco and Oman and worked at the Missouri Botanical Garden Smithsonian Institution and National Science Foundation Porter became a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London Clare Hall Cambridge University University of Canterbury and American Association for the Advancement of Science His many written pages about Darwin and plants found in the United States and abroad include 10 books 68 papers in refereed journals 32 book chapters 57 book reviews and 18 popular articles Porter became senior editor and director of the Darwin Correspondence Project at Cambridge University and received awards for his research from Phi Beta Kappa the Virginia Museum of Natural History and the Science Museum of Virginia Duncan Porter has been an important influence on students and scientists studying evolution and Charles Darwin for many years through his 10 plus books and the many classes he taught at Virginia Tech said Ferrum College Professor of Environmental Science and Biology Carolyn Thomas We are pleased that our students and other members of the Ferrum College community will have the opportunity to hear Dr Porter speak Porter was born and raised in California He attended Ventura College and received his BA and MA degrees from Stanford and PhD from Harvard in Biological Sciences A Postdoctoral Assistantship at Stanford studying the flora of the Galapagos Islands gave him a life long interest in Charles Darwin This led him to follow Darwin s footsteps in England Scotland Wales France Ecuador Chile and New Zealand and wish that he could see more of the places the great

  • Ferrum College to Host Colorful Fundraising 5K
    s year long Centennial Celebration To exemplify the College s motto Not Self But Others we aim to double our charitable donation of 1 300 from last year s race It is amazing to see what the College and the community can achieve when they come together for a great cause For this year s new Chalk It Up 5K theme participants are encouraged to wear white as they will be covered in a variety of colored powders as they run to produce fun and unique patterns on both themselves and their clothing The colored chalk is really non toxic cornstarch that is 100 safe for people and the environment Costumes are encouraged and there will be an award presented to the most colorful runner Though the run is for fun overall male and female awards will also be presented For years the Y has done many great races both at Rocky Mount and Smith Mountain Lake so we are going to build on that momentum and offer a really unique experience with this race We are sure the community will come out to support this event because it is something fun and different for both participants and spectators said Ferrum YMCA Branch Director Chris Rill the co event director Early packet pick up and race registration will take place March 28 from 2 to 6 PM at the Ferrum YMCA on campus Race day registration tables and packet pick up will be located at the Ferrum YMCA from 11 to 11 45 AM on Saturday March 29 For more information and to register in advance online visit www ferrum edu 5K About Ferrum College Ferrum College is a four year private co educational liberal arts college related to the United Methodist Church Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized

  • Faculty, Staff and Students Attend Energy & Sustainability Conference
    Jon Alger James Madison University President and Colette Sheehy University of Virginia s Vice President for Management and Budget The panelists discussed why investments are made in energy and sustainability and how those investments support their respective institutional missions Ferrum s strong commitment to sustainability has been recognized by grant support from The Jessie Ball duPont Fund noted Dr Braaten We are grateful for duPont s validation of our efforts and appreciate this opportunity to share our experiences with this group Ferrum College students Dean Trey Ousterhout 16 and Kyra Schultz 16 also attended the conference which Ousterhout described as extraordinary In addition to all of the cool ideas the other schools were sharing we met a group of students from Christopher Newport University CNU who wanted our advice and help on starting a sustainability program said Ousterhout He was the campus energy conservation intern last summer a position funded by a duPont grant Kyra and I are excited to help especially due to our experience working for Ferrum s sustainability department Being able to interact and help other schools was the most exciting part of the meeting and we look forward to working with the other students in the future Schultz shares Ousterhout s enthusiasm at the prospect of working with the CNU students We explained to the students how far Ferrum has progressed in such a short period of time and that it is completely plausible for them to pilot their own program It was invigorating to be seen as a leader in sustainability on college campuses Schultz also noted that the conference offered opportunities to observe new innovations in sustainable technology that could be incorporated into life at Ferrum as well as varied perspectives on the future of energy and overall sustainability I enjoyed how it brought
