    clear verbal notification to re enter the building No prior notification shall be given to any specific building as to a specific date and time Thank you for your help in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for us all If you have any questions or concerns please call EH S at 590 1414 Full List of Safety Guidelines open Fire Safety Guidelines Know where the fire protection systems are located pull stations fire extinguishers and exit If you see a fire or smell smoke inside a building PULL the fire alarm and LEAVE the building Evacuate to a safe distance usually 300 feet away from a possibly burning building CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY Give the dispatcher the name and location of the building Remain calm when talking with the dispatcher so they can understand you clearly FGCU University Police Department will contact the San Carlos Fire Department Portable fire extinguishers are to help building occupants get out of a potentially dangerous situation or to put out a fire that is small the size of a small waste paper basket For anything larger activate the fire alarm system and evacuate the building open Evacuation When the fire alarm sounds immediate evacuation is mandatory Before opening a door first determine if the door is hot if hot remain in the room until fire fighters get to you Stuff towels sheets or other material under the door to keep smoke out If you are able to exit the building make sure that you leave lights on and shut doors behind as you leave room or hallway doors Never use elevators in buildings when the fire alarm system is activated Once outside move away from the building to provide open space for the fire department NEVER RE ENTER A BURNING BUILDING Stay outside until you are told to re enter the building by fire department or university officials open Evacuation of Individuals with Disabilities Students please notify Adaptive Services of your schedule Faculty Staff notify your Supervisor of the type of assistance needed during an evacuation Guests please notify the event supervisor if assistance is needed during an emergency If others can t help you in the event of an emergency go to the nearest stairwell or exterior landing Remain there and ask others to notify fire fighters of your location and that you need assistance Building maps are located by the elevators to assist in finding stairwells The stairwells or exterior landings are called areas of refuge and are designed to provide protection from smoke and fire Keep the stairwell doors closed If you are unable to make your way to a stairwell or area of refuge and the fire alarm is not activated ask others to activate the fire alarm on your floor This will alert the fire fighters rescue team If able go to a room close the door behind you and ask everyone to alert fighters of your location If smoke becomes too dense to breathe position yourself so that

    50 institutions that participated in the Sustainably Tracking Assessment Rating System STARS pilot The university earned a STARS Silver Rating in 2011 and a Gold Rating in 2014 Florida Gulf Coast University singed the Carbon Climate Leadership Commitment in 2007 formerly known as the American Colleges University Presidents Climate Commitment In doing so we pledged to develop of a comprehensive plan to achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible Second Nature the Climate Leadership s direct support organization defines carbon neutrality as having no net greenhouse gas GHG emissions to be achieved by eliminating net GHG emissions or by minimizing GHG emissions as much as possible and using carbon offsets or other measures to mitigate the remaining emissions Upon signing the Commitment FGCU set a climate neutrality date of 2050 and agreed to immediately take the following tangible actions Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U S Green Building Council s LEED Silver standard or higher Adopt an energy efficient appliance purchasing policy Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty staff students and visitors at our institution The tangible actions established by FGCU upon signing the agreement were our first step to taking more carbon out of the earth s atmosphere than we put into it on an annual basis As we continue on our path to carbon neutrality we regularly submit Greenhouse Gas Reports Climate Action Plans and Progress Reports to Second Nature All reports can be viewed on the Second Nature s Reporting System The Earth Charter is an ethical framework for building a just sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century Florida Gulf Coast University has been an International Affiliate of the Earth Charter since 2009 when President Bradshaw signed the
