    borrowers are required to use a FSA ID made up of a username and password to access certain U S Department of Education websites A FSA ID is used to confirm identity when accessing financial aid information and electronically signing federal student aid documents Apply for a FSA ID here Step 2 Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA To apply for all federal some state and most FGCU aid programs students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible Complete the FAFSA on line at http www fafsa gov Financial aid is awarded on a first come first served basis FGCU has established a March 1 priority filing deadline Applications filed by March 1 will receive priority consideration for limited funding sources FGCU s school code for the FAFSA is 032553 Keep in mind that applying for financial aid is an annual process You must complete the FAFSA each year Step 3 Student Aid Report The federal processor will analyze the information you provided on the FAFSA using a federal mandated formula They will calculate your Expected Family Contribution EFC which is used to determine your eligibility for financial aid The federal processor will send you a Student Aid Report SAR which includes your EFC as well as a summary of the information that you reported on the FAFSA If you included your email address on the FAFSA you will receive your SAR by email from the federal processor Review this information carefully and make any needed corrections electronically If you included FGCU among the colleges that you reported on the FAFSA the Financial Aid office will receive an electronic record of your application information directly from the federal processor If you didn t include FGCU on your

    financial aid regulations require that students who receive federal Title IV aid must complete an academically related activity in each course in which they are enrolled prior to the disbursement of their financial aid Effective Fall 2015 financial aid and scholarships will be disbursed only after all attendance every course has been confirmed for the term of enrollment In order to accomplish this students must complete an academically related activity assignment via Canvas Examples of acceptable evidence of attendance at an academically related activity for an in person class include submitting an academic assignment taking an exam quiz Examples of acceptable evidence of attendance at an academically related activity for an online class include submission of an academic assignment or exam documented participation in an interactive tutorial posting by the student showing participation in an online study group assigned by the instructor post by the student in a discussion forum showing participation in an online discussion about academic matters This assignment should be listed as due at the end of the first week of classes but it should not be closed until week eight of the term in order to ensure that students whose aid is delayed are able to complete the assignment and receive a late disbursement without causing extra work for the faculty member The confirmation of attendance via an academically related activity will be required for all students not only those receiving financial aid Faculty Resources Click on the following pdf for assistance on how to create an assignment in Canvas to verify attendance Verification of Attendance in Canvas VAC Students Resources Instructions to complete an assignment in Canvas to satisfy the attendance requirement Login to Canvas https canvas fgcu edu Identify if an academic activity assignment is available for you to complete Do this for each

    33965 open How long does the process take Students selected for verification will not be packaged for financial aid until the Office of Financial Aid Scholarships has received all requested required documentation and the verification process has been completed Depending on the time of year the verification review process can take up to 15 business days from the time all requested required documents are received All required documents should be submitted to the Financial Aid Office no later than 14 business days from the initial date of request Students should monitor their email daily to ensure timely processing Delays in submitting all required documents will cause a delay in awarding of financial aid which may result in the student being responsible for paying fees out of pocket at the payment deadline date Individuals who have filed extensions or are self employed and file their taxes later in the year are not excused from the verification process It is recommended that federal income tax returns be filed as soon as possible as tax data is needed to complete the verification process Financial aid applicants for the 2015 2016 award year selected for verification must complete the process by the deadline of September 26 2016 subject to change by the Department of Education or 120 days after the last day of the student s enrollment whichever is earlier open What happens if there are discrepancies with my FAFSA Once all requested documents forms are received they are compared to the original FAFSA If discrepancies are found the FAFSA will be reprocessed with the correct information The correction could change the expected family contribution EFC which may cause a change in the final financial aid award Note If a student makes subsequent changes to their FAFSA it is his her responsibility to notify the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships immediately since any change could affect their Financial Aid eligibility open How can I check the status of my verification While the verification is being processed the progress can be monitored on Gulfline Under the Financial Aid tab outstanding verification requirements are listed with a status code Below is an explanation of each status code Letter Code Status Description N Needed The documents are required by the Department of Education to start the verification process I In Progress The required documents have been received by our office The documents are being reviewed The process can take up to 15 business days to complete S Sent We reviewed your file and need additional documentation An email has been sent to you with the details R Received The necessary documents have been received and processed C Complete All verification documents have been received and the process is complete open How do I verify my income Per the U S Department of Education income can only be verified by transferring the income information electronically from a valid tax return to the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or by requesting and submitting a Tax Return
