    Program 2015 2016 Catalog Year Print The Florida Gulf Coast University Honors Program offers special opportunities for superior students to pursue challenging academic work that is tailored to individual interests and abilities The Honors Program emphasizes more than just courses and grades it provides opportunities for students to participate in creative activities outside of the classroom Further the Honors Program is built around a commitment to community service and civic engagement guiding principles of Florida Gulf Coast University The Honors Program is university wide and open to students of all levels Prospective honors students must meet high academic standards and should be interested in developing themselves beyond the traditional classroom setting Current FGCU students should have a G P A of 3 5 or higher Our application is available through our webpage www fgcu edu honors There are many benefits to participating in the Honors Program It offers courses that are unique They range in nature from courses that take a unique view of a particular subject matter to courses that are offered outside FGCU to honors sections of general education courses Moreover the FGCU Honors Program offers scholarships and special events and activities that are available only to students in the program Resident students of the Honors Program can request to be placed in Honors Housing All students in the Honors Program enjoy priority registration and have extended library privileges Each student who fulfills Honors Program requirements is given special recognition at graduation and a notation is included on the student s official transcript Successful completion of an honors program curriculum demonstrates an individual s ability to study independently yet collaboratively and to achieve excellence qualities that are valued by professional schools graduate schools and employers Graduation Requirements To graduate from the Honors Program students must have an FGCU GPA of 3 5 or higher complete a minimum of 12 credits of honors courses and complete the appropriate number of Honors Experiences The number of Experiences required depends upon when the student entered the Honors Program Students entering the Honors Program as First Time in College students and who do not have an Associates Degree A A must complete the First Year Experience and two of the other experiences from the list below All other students must complete at least two experiences from the list below First Year Experience Because our students come to FGCU with varied academic backgrounds the classes for our First Year Experience vary some by student In general we recommend the schedule listed below but the student will work with the Honors Academic Advisor to build a first year schedule appropriate for their degree program and academic status Fall One 3 credit Honors Course other than English Composition ENC 1101 or ENC 1102 Honors ENC 1101 Composition I or ENC 1102 Composition II if not already completed Honors LDR 2110 Lessons in Leadership and or Honors IDH 2051 Research Symposium Spring One 3 credit Honors Course other than English Composition ENC 1102 Honors ENC 1102

    learning is such a powerful teaching tool and because service learning sets the stage for continued community involvement University founders established service learning as an undergraduate requirement How Service Learning Works Students admitted to FGCU as first year FTIC students or lower level transfers must complete 80 hours of service learning as part of their graduation requirement Students admitted as upper level transfers must complete 40 hours of service learning as part of their graduation requirement FTIC students who have earned an AA degree prior to matriculating at FGCU through dual enrollment and accelerated credit must complete 40 hours of service learning as part of their graduation requirement Students dual enrolled in the FGCU Accelerated Collegiate Experience ACE program part time or full time will be required to complete 80 hours of service learning as part of their graduation requirement Students who have already completed a bachelor s degree at another institution and are admitted to FGCU to complete a second undergraduate degree must complete 40 hours of service learning as part of their second degree s graduation requirements Students who have completed a bachelor s degree at FGCU and are re admitted to FGCU to complete a second undergraduate degree have already fulfilled the degree requirements for service learning however if they register for a class that has a service learning requirement they are obligated to complete it as a component of the course s requirements Although there is no service learning graduation requirement for graduate level students they may be enrolled in courses that integrate service learning as an effective teaching methodology and therefore would engage in service as a component of their coursework It is each student s responsibility to know his or her classification at matriculation and to submit and document the required service learning hours

    and Special Programs University Colloquium University Colloquium 2015 2016 Catalog Year Print FGCU has structured its curricula to emphasize the interrelationship of knowledge across disciplines and to provide students with the ability to think in whole systems A three credit hour course University Colloquium brings together students and faculty from all disciplines in an interdisciplinary learning experience The university s guiding principles and values are discussed in this course and students are expected to develop critical thinking and communication skills Because this course is required for all undergraduates the University Colloquium is housed within Undergraduate Studies It is a writing intensive course and students are required to complete ten hours of service learning related to the natural environment as part of the course The University Colloquium A Sustainable Future Conceptual basis for University Colloquium Adopted January 15 1997 Dean s Council Meeting We have made a commitment as a university to make environmental education an integral part of our identity One of our university wide outcomes is that all students will develop an ecological perspective A way to accomplish this perspective is to devise a course or group of experiences with an environmental focus that all FGCU undergraduate students must complete and in which faculty from all five colleges would be involved Because ecology applies to our total living space and interrelationships human and natural it is relevant to all our disciplines and professions Thus an ecology course would touch on all the university wide goals and outcomes and more Students would not be introduced to FGCU values they would participate in them Goals The University Colloquium is an interdisciplinary environmental education course designed to explore the concept of sustainability as it relates to a variety of considerations and forces in the environment In particular we will consider ecological social
