    the spring semester The selected PALs will be assigned to an SLS 1501 Effective Learning course to enrich the academic performance of mentees in and beyond the classroom As a mentor the PAL will facilitate the development of mentees self awareness as a means of both personal and academic success The PAL is trained to provide guidance resources structure and accountability for mentee students Selection Process Overview Step 1 Thoroughly review selection process and application material Confirm that all dates and times work for your schedule and note if you have questions about the PAL position or selection process Thoroughly review the PAL Information Packet and website for information on the qualities duties and qualifications of a PAL The packet includes tentative orientation and training dates application material and general program information Step 2 Complete the online application by Friday October 16 2015 at 12pm The application is designed to better inform us about an applicant s background work history academic pursuits and motivation for becoming a PAL The application consists of seven parts contact and general information academic information availability short answer questions University and community involvement recommendations FERPA waiver and your confirmation and signature Access the application at NOTE View the PAL Information Packet for full details on the following Short answer questions You will be asked to provide short paragraph answers no more than 250 words on four questions We suggest you type your responses in a Word document to check for spelling and grammer and then copy and paste the responses in the online application It is not possible to save the short answer responses in the application and come back Recommenders You will be asked to provide contact information on your application for two references one FGCU faculty member and one current FGCU student It

    academic goals and enhance knowledge of campus resources It is a chance for a student to talk about his her own experience at FGCU in and out of the classroom Academic Retention Coordinators are available to coach students through obstacles that arise at any point in the academic career and to help students create positive effective habits Academic Standing Hold The Center for Academic Achievement is dedicated to assist students to return to and maintain good academic standing An academic standing hold has significant impact on a student s funding for college now and in the future course registration and ultimately their ability to graduate with a degree FERPA FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as amended and is also known as The Buckley Amendment FERPA is the United States federal law that protects student records privacy and provides for review and disclosure rights Please review the information linked below to help you understand FERPA and what it means to you These pages outline student rights under FERPA to review educational records and to allow or restrict access to third parties Please note that some information called Directory Information may be released to third parties without the student s prior consent unless the student files a written request to restrict directory information access FERPA Annual Notice to Students Accurately Defining Supplemental Instruction SI An SI session is similar to a weekly study group The difference is that the SI study group is hosted by a SI leader The SI leader is an experienced student with a strong academic background who is trained in hosting effective study sessions In addition the SI leader regularly attends the course s lectures alongside enrolled students taking lecture notes and preparing for the next SI session The SI leader will

    Retention Coordinator available to provide individualized academic coaching and workshops to support students Additionally the Instructional Support Program offers a Math and Science Tutoring Lab and Supplemental Instruction to all FGCU students More information about the CAA programs and services may be found below Absent Professor Program If a professor plans to attend a conference has a professional meeting or any other commitment that interferes with a class meeting the Center for Academic Achievement can provide backup service Rather than cancel class we would love the opportunity To coach students on academic skills To introduce them to a current topic of interest To provide information on ways to enhance the educational experience Fill out the Absent Professor Program Request Form to utilize this service for your course If possible the CAA staff prefers a two week notice to accommodate you presentation needs Although we do our best to meet each request we can not guarantee this service FASTRACK FASTRACK is a web based early warning system which allows faculty the opportunity to quickly send a report regarding a student who may be at academic risk The report is submitted to First Year Advising in the Office of New Student Programs where an academic advisor who serves as a liaison for student success in early intervention will contact the at risk student Additionally the report will be forwarded to several other departments that can assist the student to address the academic concern Faculty submitting FASTRACK reports will receive email feedback regarding the intervention approaches taken with the referred student Supplemental Instruction Supplemental Instruction is offered by the CAA primarily for historically difficult courses where 1 3 or more of the students typically earn a D F withdraw or have a high degree of repeating students Each SI leader attends one professor
