    parent in law step parent child spouse partner sibling grandparent brother in law or sister in law of an employee up to 5 working days if the discharge of duties associated with the death of a family member as described above involves travel outside Germany up to 7 working days 25 40 and 50 years working jubilee 1 working day illness of spouse or a child or parents or stepparents living in employee s household if medical certificate is presented attesting the help of the employee and if the employee does not find immediate help no more than twice in a calendar year up to 4 working days in addition to the 10 working days for a sick child as per BGB paragraph 616 Should a parent require additional special leave due to sickness of a child of less than 12 years of age see stipulations above state health insurance will cover a percentage of salary Private insurance coverage depends on individual contracts The obligations of BGB paragraph 616 are thereby fulfilled as regards special leave Special leave requests must be filled out by the employee The reason for absence and the need for a substitute must be indicated The form must be signed by the principal supervisor and then forwarded to the head of school Sick Leave Every employee has to notify the school immediately in case of sickness A doctor s certificate is to be submitted from the fourth day of sickness German law states that an employer is entitled to a doctor s certificate from the first day of sickness In the case of long term sickness full salary will be paid by the school for six weeks after that state health insurance will pay a percentage of net salary Depending on length of service the school will cover the difference up to 100 for a certain period See Manteltarifvertrag Collective Bargaining Agreement for details Private health insurance coverage depends on individual contracts See also Section 1 5 Absence Maternity leave 14 weeks 6 weeks before predicted birth of child 8 weeks thereafter no reduction in pay Parental leave limited to three years per child both parents can take child care leave at separate times 12 months of the three years can be taken at a later date but before child s 8th birthday part time work during child care leave is permissible Compassionate leave not formally regulated for cases not covered under the above sections final decision rests with the head of school either as paid or as unpaid leave Faculty leave Compensatory leave Additional work done by faculty is usually compensated for via appropriate reduction of obligations If no compensatory free time is given additional work will be paid for If time is to be taken in compensation then compensatory leave for additional work done during the first half of a school year should occur before the end of that school year Compensatory leave for work done during the second half of a school year
