    Fax 305 348 7463 Email cri fiu edu SIPA Home Home News 2014 Seminar on Water Infrastructure in Cuba Seminar on Water Infrastructure in Cuba Tuesday February 18 2014 On February 12 2014 the Cuban Research Institute held a half day seminar on water infrastructure in Cuba in conjunction with the FIU College of Engineering and Computing the Applied Research Center the Global Water for Substainability Program the Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers Several FIU experts and members of the Cuban American Asociation of Civil Engineers discussed Cuba s hydrology potable water resources management the state of the current infrastructure future development needs and funding models and alternatives Participants in the seminar included Dr Irma Becerra Fernández Vice President for Engagement FIU Dr Giri Narasimhan Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies College of Engineering and Computing FIU Dr Inés Triay Director Applied Research Center FIU Dr María Donoso Director Global Water for Sustainability Program FIU Mr Josenrique Cueto City of Coral Gables Public Works Department Dr Georgio Tachiev Applied Research Center FIU Ms María Fernández Porrata Past President Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers Dr Héctor Fuentes College of Engineering and

    348 1991 Fax 305 348 7463 Email cri fiu edu SIPA Home Home News 2014 CRI LACC and FIU Libraries Award Díaz Ayala Library Travel Grants CRI LACC and FIU Libraries Award Díaz Ayala Library Travel Grants Monday March 17 2014 Cristóbal Díaz Ayala at the 2012 Arts Carnival in Barranquilla Colombia The Cuban Research Institute the Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Libraries at Florida International University are pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Díaz Ayala Library Travel Grant competition This is the ninth round of winners of the grants designed to increase access to the special collections on Cuba and its diaspora at FIU Grant recipients will spend several days studying the collections as part of their research and give a lecture during their stay at FIU The following scholars will receive funding to travel to Miami to conduct research at the Díaz Ayala Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection and other special collections housed in the Green Library during the spring and early summer of 2014 Anita Bradford Casavantes Assistant Profesor Departments of History and Chicano Latino Studies University of California Irvine Remembering Pedro Pan Faith Family Freedom and Cuban American Collective Memory

    Miami FL 33199 Tel 305 348 1991 Fax 305 348 7463 Email cri fiu edu SIPA Home Home News 2014 Meet the Current José Antonio Echeverría Scholar Meet the Current José Antonio Echeverría Scholar Sunday March 2 2014 The José Antonio Echeverría Scholarship is awarded every year to a student of Politics and International Relations or Architecture at Florida International University In 2007 the family and friends of the Cuban student leader José Antonio Echeverría donated 50 000 to establish the scholarship fund at FIU The scholarship awards 2 000 each academic year to cover tuition books and other educational expenses Although Echeverría was an architecture student the scholarship is awarded to encourage students to become active in governmental and political affairs The recipient of the 2013 José Antonio Echeverría Scholarship is Glenda Almela Born in Havana Cuba Glenda came to the United States at the age of nine with her parents and brother She obtained her Associate Degree in Political Science with highest honors from Miami Dade College She is now working toward a Bachelor s degree in Politics with a certificate in Cuban and Cuban American Studies at FIU In the future she hopes to attend law school

    Cintas Foundation Fiftieth Anniversary of the Cintas Foundation Saturday April 26 2014 Cintas fellow Humberto Calzada in front of his 1989 painting La danza de los millones The Cintas Foundation is celebrating 50 years of supporting visual artists architects writers and composers of Cuban origin living and working outside of Cuba The foundation was established with funds from the estate of the late Oscar B Cintas a former Cuban ambassador to the United States and a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts Cintas fellowships acknowledge creative accomplishments and encourage the development of creative artists in architecture literature music composition and the visual arts Past recipients include the following Writers Lydia Cabrera Guillermo Cabrera Infante Reinaldo Arenas Antonio Benítez Rojo Carlos Alberto Montaner Oscar Hijuelos Cristina García and Achy Obejas Visual artists Cundo Bermúdez Rolando López Dirube Félix González Torres José Bedia Humberto Calzada Ana Mendieta and María Martínez Cañas Architects Nicolás Quintana Ricardo Porro Andrés M Duany and Marylis Nepomechie Composers Bebo Valdés Mario Bauzá Orlando García and Armando Tranquilino The Cuban Research Institute is proud to have Cintas fellows Humberto Calzada as a member of its Community Advisory Board and Orlando García as a member of its Faculty
