  • CRI Presented "Classically Cuban: Music for Martí" | Cuban Research Institute
    Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall FIU s Latin American and Caribbean Center and Islas Canarias Restaurant cosponsored the event More than 300 faculty staff students and other members of the community attended the concert The program chosen by the Cuban attorney independent scholar and collector Emilio Cueto included musical pieces inspired by José Martí and poems by the Cuban apostle The music was directed by Armando Tranquilino composer pianist and FIU professor This was the fifth year Cueto and Tranquilino collaborated to produce the concert series sponsored by the CRI Debbie Orta Luz Marina Salazar and John Lucas performed the poems Mike Orta pianist Orlando Machado percussionist and Nicky Orta bassist performed the musical pieces Among the concert pieces inspired by Martí s life and works were Himno a José Martí 1905 by Hubert de Blanck 1856 1932 and the legendary Clave a Martí composed in 1897 by José Tereso Valdés and for which Emilio Valdés Villillo wrote the lyrics in 1906 The poems written by Martí and music combinations performed included Aquí está el pecho mujer with music by Ernesto Lecuona 1895 1963 Si ves un monte de espuma with music by Joaquín Nin Culmell 1908 2004 and

  • 8th CRI Conference on Cuban and Cuban-American Studies | Cuban Research Institute
    by hosting its 8th Conference on Cuban and Cuban American Studies The event was held February 11 13 2010 The overarching theme of the conference Cuba 2010 An Island in a Global World addressed on the current political economic cultural and social dynamics on the island and the diaspora in light of a changing world As in the past the conference was interdisciplinary and international in scope This year there were over 140 participants in 31 concurrent panels covering a broad range of topics such as literature cinema art history and social and political issues Panelists represented a wide gamut of institutions in the United States Puerto Rico Spain France Mexico Venezuela and Cuba As part of the conference program on the evening of February 11th the CRI hosted a screening of the award winning documentary Cuba El arte de la espera about the return of a Cuban exile to his small hometown formerly dominated by the sugar milling operations of the United Fruit Company Filmmaker Eduardo Lamora introduced and discussed the film This screening was the U S premiere of the documentary The conference was cosponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Miami and

    Estudios Cubanos y Cubanoamericanos auspiciada por el Centro de Investigaciones Cubanas de la Universidad Internacional de la Florida FIU en Miami del 11 al 13 de febrero pasado Durante tres días se reunieron más de 140 estudiosos de las ciencias sociales y las humanidades agrupados en 32 paneles sobre la historia cultura economía política y población cubana en la Isla y la diáspora Organizada eficientemente por la poeta exiliada Uva de Aragón la conferencia convocó a intelectuales residentes en Estados Unidos Canadá España Puerto Rico México Chile Francia Alemania Israel y por primera vez en años la propia Cuba En un ambiente sosegado y respetuoso de las diferencias se discutieron múltiples aspectos del pasado presente y futuro de Cuba Uno de los paneles giró en torno a las nociones de raza nación y diáspora en la literatura cubana del siglo XIX Una sesión plenaria evocó la memoria de la crítica literaria Nara Araújo quien vivió en Cuba México Estados Unidos Brasil y Francia En el panel en que participé escudriñamos las semejanzas y diferencias entre inmigrantes cubanos puertorriqueños y dominicanos el origen de la ideología del exilio cubano y la influencia del español en el inglés hablado por los cubanos en Miami El estreno estadounidense del conmovedor documental de Eduardo Lamora Cuba El arte de la espera merece un comentario aparte Después de 27 años de ausencia Lamora narra su regreso a su pueblo natal el antiguo Central Preston ahora Central Guatemala un decaído asentamiento rural en la provincia de Holguín Mediante entrevistas con familiares amistades y conocidos así como imágenes inquietantes Lamora comunica el desasosiego de los habitantes ante el cierre del principal ingenio azucarero de la zona en el año 2000 Ninguno de los entrevistados espera que las cosas mejoren en su pueblo cuando muera Fidel Una sesión
