    Juan Carlos Gómez Mary Gundrum Stephen K Harper Phyllis Diane Kotey Laverne Pinkney Supervising Attorneys Request Assistance Community Support Supporters Exp Learning Giving Florida Center for Capital Representation at FIU Law The Family Law Clinic is a one semester five graded credit clinic Student interns will learn the skills necessary to provide high quality legal representation for families and children This course focuses on representation of individuals in both contested and uncontested divorces establishment modification and enforcement of a variety of family cases including paternity child support spousal support custody and visitation domestic violence and dependency Cases are selected to provide students with experience in pretrial and trial procedure negotiation discovery and mediation The student experience will include interviewing clients and witnesses investigation legal research reviewing court and other records from related or prior proceedings participating in making strategic case decisions motion practice preparation of lay and expert witnesses oral argument of motions and the preparation of trial and appellate briefs Student interns will handle cases in one or more substantive areas of law and assume responsibility for their assigned cases including court appearances and meetings All applicants for services must be residents of Miami Dade County Florida and income must not exceed the Federal Poverty Guidelines Credits Five graded credits Time Commitment Average 17 hours a week minimum 238 hours for the semester including case work supervision and seminar Faculty Laverne Pinkney Director Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor Spring 2015 Class Time Tuesday Thursday 1 p m 2 50 p m Prerequisite 45 credits Pre or Co requisite Professional Responsibility Evidence and Family Law Certified Legal Intern Certification Required Yes Priority will be given to those students who have 48 credits clearance from the Florida Bar and can be approved as Certified Legal Intern Admissions Juris Doctor Program LL M
