    on March 15 2012 The new code provisions based on the recommendations are geared toward decreasing the vulnerability of roofs due to rooftop equipment damage in hurricanes This will impact the entire State of Florida including its High Velocity Hurricane Zone Broward and Miami Dade counties Improved design practices based on the new provisions will increase Florida s economic competitiveness 8 Why is the Wall of Wind important High growth in hurricane induced losses from 1 3B year prior to 1990 to 36B year post 2000 is a major concern for U S coastal communities Wall of Wind research projects are providing focus and leadership in urgently needed integrative hurricane engineering research and education to quantify and communicate hurricane risks and losses mitigate hurricane impacts on the built environment and enhance sustainability of infrastructure and business enterprise The research to application endeavor at such a rapid pace underscores the importance of FIU s Wall of Wind in creating hurricane resilient communities 9 Is this the only full scale testing facility of its kind The Institute for Business and Home Safety has a larger facility located in South Carolina that simulates wind events in a similar manner Within its test chamber the IBHS facility can generate realistic Category 1 2 and 3 hurricane force winds extra tropical windstorms similar to those associated with the passage of a frontal system or Nor easter thunderstorm frontal winds wildfires and hailstorms Construction of the Research Center was wholly funded by property insurers and reinsurers at a cost of approximately 40 million for construction and initial outfitting http disastersafety org research center 10 Is the facility open for public visits Given the nature of the testing public visits are usually now allowed Group visits however may be accommodated with a prior request of at least two weeks 11 Is the facility open for commercial or business contracts Yes Testing services for commercial and business clients are available Please contact us for more information 12 Is there a cost involved with testing at the Wall of Wind Yes All private testing is performed at the businesses expense Exact costs are dependent on the nature and duration of the testing required 13 Are the model structures being tested always destroyed Not necessarily The WOW has the unique capability of generating high speed hurricane intensity winds 150 mph but not all testing requires to go up to destructive levels to evaluate its performance Aerodynamic non destructive testing can also be done where tenths to hundreds of instruments can monitor the behavior of the model 14 What is the future goal for the Wall of Wind The future goal of the Wall of Wind is to remain at the forefront of hurricane research while creating safer communities in Florida and across the nation One idea is to develop new holistic testing protocols for product testing as opposed to current component level testing methods These developments can be pursued through the excellent relationship with the Miami Dade County Building and

  • FIU and University of Miami co-host 2013 ASCE southeast student conference | FIU Wall of Wind
