and they mainly do it at certain times and only from about 20 percent of their investments But venture capital does seem to work for entrepreneurs who use it as fuel to make a hot venture hotter and to become more competitive in order to dominate their space eBay got venture capital after it was growing and profitable and broke from the pack Getting venture capital does not guarantee entrepreneurs a home run But getting it too soon can mean that entrepreneurs lose control of the venture and of the fortune it creates So when should you seek venture capital to build your giant company To determine the right timing understand the stage of your industry and the stage of your venture which will be covered in a future blog To know the right timing for your industry examine the returns from the venture capital industry The amount of VC funding and their returns soar only when high potential industries are emerging Since the start of the venture capital industry venture capital returns have risen when they invested at the emerging and take off stages of new industries such as semiconductors in the 1960s PCs and biotechnology in the 1970s telecommunications in the 1980s and 1990s Internet 1 0 in the 1990s and Internet 2 0 in the 2000s At other times average venture capital returns seem to fall The reason for this rise and fall in venture capital returns is that emerging high potential industries create giants allow venture capitalists to earn high returns and make billion dollar fortunes for entrepreneurs But without new emerging industries it becomes difficult to find diamonds Entrepreneurs who seek venture capital in challenging times may find that they are ceding too much equity and power to the VCs Any setbacks could adversely affect the venture the VCs and the entrepreneurs While VCs have many arrows in their quiver most entrepreneurs have only one and they may be better off delaying venture capital This is not to suggest that individual venture capitalists do not earn high returns from occasional hits But on the whole the industry suffers when high potential industries are not emerging Great venture capitalists should be defined as those who help build billion dollar companies and earn high returns even when there are no high potential emerging industries MY TAKE Entrepreneurs can benefit by knowing how to take off without venture capital and to use venture capital only if they cannot dominate without it as fuel for the fire not as a crutch or catalyst Firstly your odds of getting venture capital from larger more established venture capital funds before proof of success are slim Secondly even if you succeed at getting venture capital early your odds of staying in control are low The smallest setback could send you packing out of your venture So what is the difference between Jobs I and Jobs II Jobs I was booted out of Apple by venture capitalists who controlled the venture when the

at Georgetown University In November 2014 she also incorporated nitrogen into a business pitch winning the Startup Hoya Challenge Rocket Pitch along with a cash prize just days after whipping up that first batch That cash prize kick started the first stage of her business Santos sold the nitrogen frozen ice cream outside her dorm at Georgetown served it at events she catered there and even hosted an ice cream stand at a local farmer s market I learned about using liquid nitrogen to freeze ice cream and saw an opportunity to use this method to bring ice cream back to the basics said Santos But I needed someone to give me advice to help with the challenges of getting an idea off the ground That happened when Santos returned home to Miami In a move she describes as serendipitous she met up with the Florida SBDC at FIU which gave her the expertise she needed to start a full fledged bricks and mortar nitrogen ice cream business On May 31 Lulu s Nitrogen Ice Cream opened its doors in Miami s trendy Edgewater neighborhood Developing the idea creating a business plan and securing funding wasn t an easy process Mentors from the SBDC at FIU offered guidance for every question or challenge including permitting and construction that Lulu s Nitrogen Ice Cream faced They helped me with funding and we went over all the details of what an SBA loan entails and the information that banks expect Santos said We also worked on financial modeling getting an accurate picture of the variables I can control and those I can t Throughout the process of launching Lulu s Nitrogen Ice Cream Santos worked with two SBDC consultants Roberto Castellon whose expertise is in finance and growth acceleration and FIU alumnus George Ray III MBA 09 who specializes in assisting start up businesses One of the most important things was the relationship I built with the counselors at the SBDC said Santos The best advice I obtained is to constantly evaluate my financials and understand where costs are coming from that way I can control them and increase the bottom line Today Santos has adopted a cow named Lulu from Dakin Farms and makes her ice cream base from scratch including two vegan options Already she has developed more than 50 ice cream flavors At its Edgewater location Lulu s Nitrogen Ice Cream has a steady flow of customers many of them regulars What s next Refining the business model and creating a community of followers Once it s perfect we ll focus on growth and sharing Lulu s with others Santos said Did You Know Increasingly popular Nitrogen ice cream is made by using liquid nitrogen to flash freeze the cream base The speedy process does not allow as many ice crystals to form as traditional freezing methods creating ultra creamy ice cream Sharing Twitter 0 Facebook 9 Google 0 Linkedin 16 Email this article Print this article Authors Cynthia
