    its three tracks Community FIU and High School and 13 002 votes in the People s Pick awards explained Nancy Dahlberg the Miami Herald s entrepreneurship writer who leads the Business Plan Challenge Passion and expertise keys to success The four FIU Track judges highlighted Ashenoff s and Florin s experience passion and first hand knowledge of the healthcare industry as influencers in Room2Care s success Ashenoff has spent his career in home and community based senior services while Florin is a physician who has worked with seniors for 20 years Room2Care offers tailored services to seniors and to caregivers alike Hosts are able to list a space in their homes to offer basic care and supervision for a fee Seniors can then select which services they need and pay for each of them individually They can also provide a room in their house to the caregiver free of cost Launched in December 2014 Room2Care generates revenue from both the products available on the Care Commander website as well as a percentage of the booking fees My undergraduate degree in finance from FIU really laid the foundation for Room2Care because we re essentially working with numbers budgeting forecasting and putting together financials to make the business scalable said Ashenoff who will graduate this summer You don t really get that experience outside of school In addition to providing affordable care Room2Care is creating jobs for nurses home health aides certified nursing assistants and other healthcare workers There aren t enough jobs said Ashenoff With our model nobody loses we re creating alternatives for people that have no options Access to legal services benefits all sides Online legal matchmaking system Court Buddy winner of the People s Pick award connects people and businesses with affordable attorneys based on their budget These provide a la carte legal services such as drafting a single legal document making a single court appearance preparing single non disclosure or partnership agreements for businesses among other services Kristina an FIU alumna and James point to increasing numbers of people and small businesses that can t afford lawyers high fees and don t qualify for government sponsored legal aid A person no longer has to stress over not knowing how much an attorney s hourly rates will cost them or how to get the money for an attorney s high retainer James said in a presentation before FIU Track judges On the flip side Court Buddy offers attorneys who are trying to survive in an oversaturated legal market easier access to new clients Court Buddy currently counts 25 attorney members out of a total 50 members and averages eight to nine inquiries a day said James who opened his own law firm in 2012 Kristina who obtained Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Advertising at FIU noted that her academic experience has been key in developing and growing Court Buddy s service offerings Developing a campaign requires a lot of market research and surveys she said It s about

    venture off the ground or grow an existing business active for less than two years This is real money and I expect you to do real things with it Fleming co founder and technology practice lead of Biztegra Partners told participants as they prepared to make their presentations If you re taking other people s money you re responsible for it A record 248 entries were submitted for the 2015 competition now in its 17 th year The six semifinalists selected in each track Community FIU and High School all made live presentations before judges and filmed a 90 second video elevator pitch Participants in the FIU Track the majority of them alumni admitted the challenge wasn t easy with tough questions from the judges about costs and business models competitors target markets and marketing strategies It was tough but it s constructive criticism from someone who sees these types of presentations all the time Nicolexander Garza an FIU undergrad who co founded Senzu Foods with current FIU students Ricardo Delgado and Valerie Yoda said about the shark tank forum They suggest what areas we need to work on and we learned from their questions to us and to the others Court Buddy co founders attorney James Jones Jr an attorney and Kristina Jones an FIU alumna were asked what their critical mass would be both in terms of attorneys and non attorney members how they would attract new lawyers to the service and maintain interest of those already subscribed and details about the actual costs of running the business They brought up points that made us realize that we needed to focus more on the business side of Court Buddy said James Jones It s a process that requires our daily attention and dedication to meeting our member s needs Lessons to be learned The judges described the business proposals as interesting original and well presented One of the areas that Business Plan Challenge contestants and anyone who s planning to launch a business must overcome is the assumption factor They have to help me understand the problem and how the business will fill in the gaps said Pissaris Paint a clear picture of what the market looks like address the risks and have a plan to mitigate them describe what makes you well matched to execute the business The presenting teams also need to work on the competitive environment and how to execute the business plan noted Cousins Some couldn t explain how their product would be better than competitors until they were probed said Cousins They have to examine legal and regulatory issues provide solid information on the return for investors and conduct more sophisticated analysis about the business model The grand finale comes on April 27 when a special edition of The Miami Herald s Business Monday will showcase the winners the judge s top three selections in each track the People s Pick and the overall 2015 Challenge Champion A Closer Look at the semifinalists

    be up to three pages long with an optional additional page for a photo chart or diagram A wide range of ideas compete in the Business Plan Challenge Miami Herald entrepreneurship writer Nancy Dahlberg who leads the Business Plan Challenge pointed out that very few entries have been received as of February 13 including two for the FIU Track The crunch will come as the entry period draws to a close Ninety percent of the entries come in on the last day and in the last hour A panel of entrepreneurs executives investors advisors and academics will judge each entry examining value to the customer market opportunity business model and management team as well as marketing and financial strategies The entries are getting better every year In the early 2000s it was just a sheet of paper with ideas there was no plan to make money no indication of the problem they were solving no idea about a team said Dahlberg Due to the increased level of education and groups like the SBDC the business plans are getting more sophisticated A majority of the plans in the FIU Track are technology ventures or tech enabled businesses while the Community Track gets a broader selection restaurants gadgets mom and pop businesses and food products among others Dahlberg recalled some interesting restaurant and hospitality ideas as well as law and medicine focused plans from FIU students and alumni I d love to see more plans from the College of Engineering as well as the other colleges at FIU including hospitality and communications said Dahlberg noting that a good number of entries come from the College of Business Great ideas and concepts can come from any college Business Plan Challenge helps create a roadmap to success The lineup of recent winners in the Challenge s FIU Track includes XDG Technologies which took the top spot last year The Miami based company makes medical products designed to treat skin tags and polydactyly A fourth product is now in the works for veterinary applications in the beef industry EyeTalk an innovative pair of glasses to help the severely visually impaired to hear written text that was created by four FIU students won first place in 2013 A year earlier FIU alumna Milana Kuznetsova won second place for LegalFileIt a cloud based platform for the legal industry We ve seen a good showing of entrepreneurial spirit and mindset from students and alumni said Sousa Many entrepreneurs find it difficult to explain their idea or business as simply as possible This Challenge helps by requiring them to do that Once the Business Plan Challenge s entry period closes all of the presentations will be reviewed based on the quality of the idea and the submitted plan In early April the top six finalists in the Community and FIU Tracks will present 90 second video pitches to compete in the weeklong People s Pick contest at www miamiherald com The grand finale comes on April 27 when a
