  • Georgetown Bioethics Research Library | Paintings in Healy 102
    on the first floor of Healy Hall s south wing has a classical revival air The ceiling is graced with ceiling paintings by Brother Francis Schroen S J Coffers are formed by cross beams fabricated from plaster which Brother Schroen grained to look like oak Set into each coffer are paintings in gilt frames Schroen was a self taught artist He was born in 1857 in Germany and came to the United States as an infant Schroen was raised in Maryland and worked as a house painter and wall decorator His wife of 14 years died of an illness when he was 35 In 1898 at age 41 he was accepted as a Jesuit lay brother Schroen s paintings and decorative art are found in several Jesuit churches and colleges Boston College Georgetown Fordham St Joseph s in Philadelphia the Gesu church also in Philadelphia the cathedral of Kingston Jamaica and the Church of the Holy Name in New Orleans He died in 1925 at Georgetown Additional information about Schroen and his work can be found at the following places Boston College Magazine Fall 2002 Brother Schroen is featured in section 7 Georgetown University Carroll Parlor Healy Hall 107 Georgetown

    Internal Medicine in Rwanda After five years of training in Paris hospitals he entered practice as an assistant physician at Hôpital Joffre Dupuyrien Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris Dr Rwabihama s long standing interest in ethics arose from his years of hospital practice He received two years of training at the Faculty of Medicine Université Paris 7 before graduating with his Master of Science degree in Ethics and Health law He is now completing research for his doctorate in Ethics and Health law from Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III His dissertation research focuses on the establishment of ethics committees for biomedical research in emerging countries Dr Rwabihama has published papers on Research Ethics and Clinical ethics Supported by a scholarship from The International Institute of Research in Ethics and Biomedicine IIREB in Montréal Québec Dr Rwabihama recently spent two months of study to further his dissertation research at the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature at Georgetown University In his opinion the Center is a treasure for bioethics and an indispensable tool for the development of moral philosophy as it applies to medicine Francisco Güell holds two degrees each from a different Spanish university He is licensed in biology by the University of Navarra and in philosophy by the University Pontificia of Salamanca He received his specialization in bioethics from the Cátedra de Bioética y Biojurídica de la UNESCO in Madrid and has a Diplome in Advanced Studies in Philosophy from the Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid Mr Güell is a bioethics professor at the University CEU San Pablo of Madrid which provided him with a travel and study grant to support his dissertation research and writing at the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature in Washington DC Mr Güell is working on an investigational project concerning Xavier Zubiri
