    Bioethics The Edmund D Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics PCCB at Georgetown University Medical Center was established over two decades ago in order to create a center of excellence filling a unique need for bioethics that is directly oriented towards clinical medicine and strongly rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition In its situation at Georgetown University it complements the activity and interests of the renowned Kennedy Institute of Ethics the Philosophy Department and Law Center The faculty of the PCCB have appointments in the Medical School Nursing School and Graduate School They teach conduct research and participate in patient care They are responsible for bioethics education at Georgetown Medical School and in the residency programs at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital as well as graduate medical programs locally In addition the PCCB provides the ethics consultation service for the hospital The PCCB faculty are actively engaged in a wide variety of research projects and offer further education and training through our visiting scholars program PCCB faculty serve as consultants volunteers public speakers and panelists for organizations and agencies both private and governmental Mission Statement The Edmund D Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics is a University based ethics resource for those

    and Medical Ethics Georgetown University Click here to view the Alumni Stories interview of Dr Pellegrino Click here to view the video featured during the recent celebration honoring Dr Pellegrino Edmund Pellegrino MD was Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Ethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University and founding director of the Center for Clinical Bioethics He served as Chairman of the President s Council on Bioethics in Washington DC John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics and as director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and the Center for the Advanced Study of Ethics at Georgetown University He received his BS degree from St John s University and his MD from New York University He served residencies in medicine at Bellevue Goldwater Memorial and Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospitals following which he was a research fellow in renal medicine and physiology at New York University During Dr Pellegrino s more than 65 years in medicine and university administration he has been a departmental chairman dean vice chancellor and president Dr Pellegrino authored over 600 published items in medical science philosophy and ethics and served as a member of numerous editorial boards He was the author or co author of twenty three books and the founding editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy Dr Pellegrino was a Master of the American College of Physicians Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and recipient of 52 honorary doctorates in addition to other honors and awards including the Benjamin Rush Award from the American Medical Association the Abraham Flexner Award of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Laetare Award of the University of Notre Dame Dr Pellegrino s research interests include

    with the whole hospital staff including the Departments of Pastoral Care and Social Work and conduct ethics consults from a team approach The Ethics Consultation Service Clinical Ethics Consultants G Kevin Donovan MD MA K N Sivasubramanian MD Lawrence Prograis Jr MD Sarah Vittone RN MA James Duffy SJ MD Kevin Fitzgerald SJ PhD Click here to view Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services Fifth Edition published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops What is an ethics consult Making decisions amid all the complexities of modern medicine is not easy Ethical questions can arise for instance when a patient has lost the capacity to make decisions when it is not clear whether the burdens of a treatment are worth the expected benefits or when values appear to conflict The Ethics Consultation Service is an advisory service that is designed to assist patients families and all health care professionals in identifying analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas No fees are charged for this service and all consults are kept strictly confidential How does one request a consult The Ethics Consult can be initiated by calling the Ethics Consultation Service pager number at 202 405 3959 Other options to reach the service are through the office at 202 687 1122 or the Hospital Page Operator 202 444 PAGE 7243 The Ethics Consultation Service is on call 24 hours daily One of the clinical ethicists will be on call each week Upon receiving a request for a consult the ethicist will make initial inquiries and arrange for a consult meeting that is appropriate to the needs of the parties involved in the case Who can request an initial consult Doctors patients nurses chaplains social workers or anyone involved in the case are encouraged to call us for assistance What
