    most effective keywords is an important skill that will bring the most precise and useful search results Keywords tell the search engine what you are looking for The words you choose will influence the results you get Choose the most important words search terms for your search Think about what you are trying to find What words would an author use to describe it Use specific descriptive words rather than more common words What are some possible synonyms Make your search short and to the point Eliminate extra words like a the in was and so on Every word in your query matters In most cases these words do not help define the toic for which you are searching and may yield results unrelated to your topic In some cases though small words a the do matter such as when you are trying to distinguish two similar entities For example try searching who a who and the who and see the different results you get Word order matters Word order can make a difference in the results you get For example sky blue vs blue sky Capitalization does not matter in online searches Search engines ignore most special characters and punctuation Spelling does matter but most of the time search engines will correct your spelling Try different combinatins of words and compare results Keyword search when Your term is jargon or very distinctive You don t know the subject heading Try a keyword search first then look at the subject headings and use the appropriate ones for you next search Subject searching When you search by subject heading you are searching by categories rather than keywords When a catalog or database record is created it is assigned at least one subject heading by the cataloger The subject headings are based
