    indicative of applicants potential to successfully complete the program and function as competent practitioners upon graduation The following statements represent the program philosophy of the PTA faculty and Advisory Committee Role of the Physical Therapist Assistant The physical therapist assistant is an integral part of the health care team and provides direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist The physical therapist assistant may be employed in a variety of settings in which his her role is to actively assist the physical therapist in the treatment of patients with various impairments and functional limitations The physical therapist assistant is involved in promoting awareness of the profession and an interdisciplinary approach to health through education of the patient family and community Conduct A physical therapist assistant adheres to the Standards of Ethical Conduct of the Physical Therapist Assistant set forth by the American Physical Therapy Association and abides by the laws governing practice set forth by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners The program is committed to instilling in its students a sense of professionalism and clinical excellence Education Learning is a life long process resulting in changes in knowledge behavior values and attitudes Learning takes place most readily when concepts are covered in a logical sequence and progress in difficulty from simple to complex The ability to learn is influenced by individual life experiences and one s potential Education provides opportunities for the acquisition of theoretical knowledge the development of psychomotor skills and the refinement of values and attitudes in support of GTCC s workforce productivity effort The student and the instructor are partners in the learning process The instructor facilitates learning by constructing experiences to promote the achievement of course program outcomes The student acquires significant learning through responsible and active participation Learning should

    Instructors will provide necessary accommodations based on the recommendations of disAbility Access Services To be successful in this curriculum students must be able to demonstrate the following skills abilities Observation A candidate must be able to observe a patient accurately at a distance and close at hand Observation necessitates the functional use of the sense of vision and other sensory modalities The candidate must be able to observe demonstrations and learn from experiences in the basic sciences and in the clinical physical therapy laboratory such as accurately reading dials on electrotherapeutic equipment and numbers on a goniometer hear heart and breath sounds assess normal and abnormal color changes in the skin and palpate various body parts Communication A candidate must be able to assimilate information from written sources texts journals notes medical records etc The candidate must be able to attain comprehend retain and utilize new information presented in written formats as well as produce appropriate written documentation A candidate must be able to speak with hear and observe patients in order to elicit information perceive nonverbal communications and describe changes in mood activity and posture The candidate must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and efficiently and effectively with the heart care team orally and in writing Sensorimotor A candidate must have sufficient gross motor fine motor and equilibrium functions to elicit information from patients by palpation auscultation percussion and other data collection skills A candidate must be able to execute movements required to provide therapeutic intervention e g patient transfers exercise and application of electrotherapy and emergency treatment Quick reactions are necessary not only for safety but for efficient and effective therapeutic intervention The student must have the ability to move him or herself and the patient in order to perform motor function tests and

    Campus After Long Time College President March 15 view all Events view all Contact Us Joey Jeffers Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program 336 334 4822 x 2443 Joey received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Texas in 1987 He received a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1994 He received a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007 Joey worked as a physical therapist at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas Texas from 1987 to 1994 He worked at the Winston Salem Healthcare Center from 1994 to 2001 He now practices physical therapy at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Joey became the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education for the PTA Program in 1998 and he became director in 2000 Joey lives in Winston Salem with his wife Amy and their four children Charis Josiah Faith and Ruth Keith Jenkins Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program 336 334 4822 x 2706 Keith graduated from the PTA program at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth Ohio in 1994 Keith has worked in hospitals
