    The vast majority of the cartoons are political in content and typically feature American presidents congressmen and statesmen as well as foreign government leaders Cultural Imaginings the Making of the Arab World in the Western Mind Cultural Imaginings is a collaboration between The George Washington University s Gelman Library and Georgetown University s Lauinger Library funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services to evaluate automatic book scanning methodology by digitizing approximately 2 500 monographic volumes and a number of bound manuscripts from the Middle East and North Africa Materials which are out of copyright are being made available free of charge to researchers around the world George Washington University Historical Photographs This collection of images contains photographs of individuals localities objects buildings events and groups associated with the history of the George Washington University representing a photographic time line from approximately 1859 through late 1980s Although there are some scenes covering the late 19th century its strength lies in capturing campus life people buildings and events from the 1930s to 1980s George Washington University Office of International Programs Partnerships Program Reports FOR AUTHORIZED GW COMMUNITY MEMBERS USE ONLY International Brotherhood of Teamsters records 1905 1952 The International Brotherhood of Teamsters records 1905 1952 detail the union s initial struggles for existence and unity its jurisdictional disputes its growth in membership and influence changes in organizing and bargaining techniques and in the trucking and transportation industries and the increasing strength and political involvement of the labor movement in general Munroe Charles Papers Charles Munroe 1849 1938 the inventor of smokeless gunpowder was head of the Department of Chemistry and the Dean of the Corcoran Scientific School at Columbian University which became George Washington University in 1904 between 1892 and 1898 He held a concurrent appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at GW where he earned a Ph D in 1894 and LL D in 1912 He retired in 1919 and was Dean Emeritus of the School of Graduate Studies and Professor Emeritus of Chemistry from 1919 1938 This collection contains his correspondence articles lecture notes newspaper clippings notebooks and photographs covering the years 1882 1936 Politico George Washington University Battleground Poll The Politico George Washington University Battleground Poll is a collaborative bi partisan survey produced by Republican strategist Ed Goeas of The Tarrance Group and Democrat Celinda Lake of Lake Snell Perry and Associates This national polling program is unique to the industry in that it offers the distinct perspectives of two top pollsters from different sides of the aisle Battleground Polls are conducted not for the benefit of any paying client but to give the public a look at Americans opinions and an inside peek at strategic recommendations for both political parties Rottier Jack Papers Jack Rottier 1910 1988 was a photographer for the National Capital Region of the National Park Service from the early 1960s until he retired in 1975 He moved to the Washington area about 1950 as a photographer for the

    Center Kiev Collection Map Collections Media Resources at The Gelman Library National Security Archives New Books at Gelman Library New E Resources Special Collections Research Center Teamsters Labor History Research Center Exhibits at GW Libraries MISSION The GW Libraries Exhibits Program showcases and celebrates the libraries strengths as a learning center its role in supporting research and teaching at GW its many local national and international collections and the research topics pursued by its staff Exhibits are frequently displayed in conjunction with academic lectures Library functions collections receptions and related events The Library s online only exhibits portal is available at exhibits library gwu edu CURRENT EXHIBITS The following exhibits are currently being displayed in Gelman Library or online Hebrew Printing in the Orient A panorama of typography from nearly 50 towns in the Middle East North Africa and Asia including texts in Hebrew Aramaic and the languages of Sephardic and Oriental Jewry Gelman Library 7th floor main hallway through Fall 2016 City Within a City the Kerry Stowell Watergate East Inc papers The Watergate Complex is one of the most instantly recognizable buildings in the United States But to the long term residents of the Watergate the building was their home long before it was a household name The Watergate Complex is divided into five multi use buildings including offices a hotel and apartment cooperatives One of those cooperatives is Watergate East Incorporated Over the years Watergate East residents have formed a close knit community governing themselves through a Board of Directors They have engaged in local politics reached out to the Foggy Bottom community and led a campaign to designate the Watergate Complex a Historic Landmark Building Strong Minds NEA s American Education Week A selection of promotional posters from the NEA Collection in Gelman Library s Special Collections Research Center Created as promotional materials for NEA s American Education Week AEW the posters ranging in date from 1931 to 1982 were intended to generate public support for public education The first AEW took place in 1921 serving to recognize schools staff involve parents and reach out to the community about the value of education Every year follows a theme Many times in the past the theme has been chosen to address a new challenge the country was facing the Great Depression the Space Race the Civil Rights Movement and globalization among others The posters reflect America s growing realization as it faced these challenges that education is a right for all its citizens and essential to the nation s success Gelman Library 7th floor across from the Labor History Research Center through Fall 2014 Digital DC A Community History Project Over the course of a semester students from George Washington University s History 2020 course Washington DC History Culture Politics collected historical documentation on Washington s Foggy Bottom neighborhood utilized area historical collections and partnered with community organizations to examine and write up the history of specific DC sites conducting oral history interviews with longtime residents creating
