    The Churchill Centre TCC a Chicago based international educational organization devoted to preserving the legacy of Winston Churchill agreed to provide initial funding for the construction of the National Churchill Library and Center NCLC at The George Washington University GW TCC s Board the President Laurence Geller CBE and Dr Stephen J Trachtenberg GW s president emeritus shared an interest in Winston Churchill They recognized the need for a major research facility in the nation s capital dedicated to the study of Winston Churchill 2 What s the relationship between The Churchill Centre TCC and the National Churchill Library and Center NCLC a Although both the TCC and George Washington University are separate nonprofit organizations they are cooperating to create the NCLC The TCC is providing the initial funding to create the NCLC and GW is providing the space and intellectual capital to establish this new program b The TCC will maintain its independence as a separate 501 c 3 organization continuing to work on its broader mission to foster leadership statesmanship vision courage and boldness among democratic and freedom loving peoples worldwide through the thoughts words works and deeds of Winston Spencer Churchill There will be discussions to determine how best the TCC and GW will collaborate to achieve our common goals However there have been no discussions of integrating the Churchill Centre with the NCLC or of GW taking on any of TCC s programming such as the production of its revered publication The Finest Hour c Although GW s NCLC is a separate program from TCC it will only be successful in collaboration with TCC and other Churchill related organizations in the US UK and elsewhere The NCLC looks forward to working closely with TCC the National Churchill Museum Fulton MO the Churchill War Rooms and Museum UK Chartwell Churchill s family home operated by the UK National Trust the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College University of Cambridge as well as members of the Churchill family The NCLC will join together with these and other organizations to meet the common goal of utilizing the legacy of Winston Churchill to bring greater understanding to the world 3 How will the NCLC operate How will it be governed a As a component of GW and the Gelman Library the NCLC will report through the Provost the university s chief academic officer to GW s President Working closely with the faculty students the public and the other Churchill related organizations is and will remain essential to the ongoing success of the program Thus the NCLC plans to create an Advisory Council to provide guidance connections programming and fundraising assistance b Once the facility is constructed the NCLC will develop a strategic plan This plan will guide collection development programming decisions and ensure the program is on an appropriate path for growth As is always the case at GW there will be many opportunities for faculty student and public comment and input 4 Why locate the NCLC in Washington DC

    GWImpact A Home for Churchill Fall 2012 GW Magazine Churchill Kin Visits in Support of New Center Winter 2015 Exploring Churchill s Past Future Spring 2014 GWImpact A Home for Churchill Fall 2012 Washington Post GWU to host Churchill research center 01 19 2012 Churchill center at GWU took shape on a cocktail napkin 01 20 2012 The National Churchill Library and Center We are pleased to announce that construction activites begin on Monday December 21 2015 Weekly updates on the construction including photos and information on construction impact on public areas will be on our Construction at Gelman website The George Washington University has formed a philanthropic partnership with the Chicago based Churchill Centre to establish the National Churchill Library and Center at GW Housed on the first floor of the Estelle and Melvin Gelman Library this will be the first major research facility in the nation s capital dedicated to the study of Winston Churchill As both scholar and statesman Winston Churchill is an inspiring figure for his leadership and his diplomacy The new Center through its collections interdisciplinary academic programs and educational exhibits will offer GW students faculty researchers and the public the opportunity to examine the life and legacy of Churchill The National Churchill Library and Center is expected to open in 2016 To learn more about how to support this important initiative please contact the Office of Development 202 994 8928 Greetings from the Vice Provost for Libraries Dear Visitor I hope you are as excited as we are about our partnership with the Churchill Centre to create the first center devoted to the study of the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill in our nation s capital The planned National Churchill Library and Center NCLC which will be located on the first floor of GW s Estelle and Melvin Gelman Library closely aligns with the university s new bold strategic plan This plan entitled Vision 2021 A Strategic Plan for the Third Century of The George Washington University was approved by the Board of Trustees at its May 2013 meeting Designed to help transform the university over the next decade the strategic plan focuses on four key areas that will strengthen our existing programs and direct us as we develop innovative programs to meet the needs of an evolving world Strategic Plan Pillar 1 innovation through cross disciplinary collaboration At GW we believe that cross disciplinary collaboration is crucial to developing new approaches to academic research The National Churchill Library and Center will engage disciplines from across campus including public policy international affairs education law and history to explore the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill This interdisciplinary approach will be supported by the NCLC s rich collections as they grow and will inspire and support original scholarship about Churchill s leadership and role in world history Strategic Plan Pillar 2 globalization of our e ducational and research programs Globalization of our academic programs is necessary as we prepare our students for
