    New Acquisitions Specialized Collections Selected About REECE The Global Resources Center collection of materials dealing with Russia and the Former Soviet Union is the largest non governmental collection of its kind in the Washington DC area The collection s depth and breadth allows scholars to view the historical development of Russia and the Soviet Union and follow with precision the seismic changes through which the region has lived Established in 1966 as the Sino Soviet Information Center SSIC this collection has grown and developed from a small number of faculty donated materials to a robust research center attracting scholars from around the globe Through the years of the Cold War Perestroika and Glasnost and the post Perestroika period the center continued to refine its conceptual framework finally morphing in July 2007 into a division with the new Global Resources Center It has become a 21st century collection reflecting years of experience and expertise in the field of collection development in Russian Soviet area studies The GRC collection is supported by a rich and varied Gelman Library general stacks collection on Russian Soviet area studies This is a unique historical collection in itself and it strongly represents the Cold War period works of Soviet scholarship ideology propaganda political thinking Communist Party Marxism Leninism historical and dialectical materialism Soviet economic judicial social thought art literature film and culture It covers periods of Stalinism post Stalinist reconstruction the reign of Khrushchev Brezhnev Andropov Chernenko and Gorbachev The Collection is rich not only with the works of Soviet Russian scholars ideologues and propagandists but also with the works of Western scholars sovietologists historians and analysts The GRC collection is pointedly modern and current in its primary focus a vast majority of the publications in the collection are from post 1991 period nevertheless it reflects
