    a professor in accounting at Leeward Community College For more than 30 years he has served as an outstanding instructor of accounting and computer courses He has also served as an accounting coordinator business division chair accreditation subcommittee chair and president of the Hawai i Business Education Association HBEA Kamida was also the treasurer for the Western Business and Information Technology Educators and was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to Business Education by HBEA Kamida will often give and pass on credit to his colleagues instead of being singled out for his hard work and performance His coordination and leadership of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance VITA Program at Leeward is one community service activity Roy should be applauded for In addition to coordinating the marketing and scheduling of the VITA program he also oversees the recruitment training and certification of the volunteers The commitment dedication and energy Roy has exemplified in and out of the classroom is a vital component to the Leeward CC community The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education rewards outstanding achievement and significant contribution to vocational and technical education by a community college faculty member

    major facilities renovation community outreach fundraising and national accreditation Strongly committed to student success and curricular improvement she creates enriching opportunities for her students the program and the college Benavente worked with some of Hawai i s best known chefs and developed externships for students to avoid disruption of their academic progress during extensive renovations Now an integral part of the program externships result in fantastic exposure for the college as well as on campus workshops jobs and other opportunities for the students Benavente transformed the annual spring fundraiser into a program showcase She re envisioned the event to better reflect the quality of the program and its students L ulu takes place in and around the culinary facilities with the culinary arts students taking a more prominent role alongside top chefs of Hawai i regional cuisine She also revamped the curriculum ensuring that the program reflects the most current industry standards and aligns with other UH culinary arts programs Credited with being a superb mentor to all new faculty members Benevente has been instrumental in building a cohesive team at Leeward Community College The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education rewards outstanding achievement

    Award Winner James Niino 2008 James Niino is an apprenticeship coordinator at Honolulu Community College He is honored for the extraordinary growth of the construction industry through his expansion of the apprenticeship division over the last eight years As the coordinator Niino has managed the largest apprenticeship program in the state of Hawai i with more than 3 500 students His influence has been widespread as he has been the consummate diplomat and liaison with other apprenticeship coordinators and instructors and union officials bringing harmony between the two organizations Niino was involved in planning Honolulu s Construction Initiative which provided funds for the development of a Construction Academy The high school students enrolled in the academy are taught by community college instructors In addition he has sat on a dozen hiring committees as the Construction Academy expanded its staff never hesitating to volunteer to serve the college s needs Niino is praised by colleagues for his willing spirit and extraordinary leadership abilities The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education rewards outstanding achievement and significant contribution to vocational and technical education by a community college faculty member or student The award was established by family
