    a young age and continues to incorporate 2D work into her artistic practice Marquez states My work is greatly influenced by my passion for animals Having had a childhood filled with many animals I am fascinated by their presence My observations have led me to believe there is a balance between intellect and the physical The power movement and personality of each animal is unique Capturing these mannerisms and gestures has become my obsession Using gesture each piece is given a presence I strive to communicate the wild nature all animals possess I hope to reveal their uncomplicated raw beauty as I see it Marquez s recent group exhibitions include Contact 2015 a juried exhibition Honolulu Museum of Art School Animaux Atelier 2015 Kissaten Café Honolulu and the Hawai i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition 2014 Honolulu Museum of Art School The Art Renewal Center ARC an online museum listed Marquez as an International ARC Salon Finalist 2014 2015 in the animal category She was named Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Sculpture 2015 and received the David H and Doris C Cromwell Award for excellence in figurative sculpture 2014 from the Dept of Art Art History UHM For the second time in this series of up and coming young artists exhibitions at the Waikiki Parc guitarist Aaron Cardenas will provide music at the opening reception Cardenas received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Dept of Music UHM 2015 and will attend graduate school this fall He has studied with guitar virtuosos Benjamin Verdery Frederic Hand Carlos Barbosa Lima and the Brazilian Guitar Duo s Douglas Lora and João Luiz The recipient of a full scholarship in 2013 Cardenas attended a ten day master class with Benjamin Verdery professor at Yale University and was one of a few selected to perform

    were suspended for two months after the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor UH students of Japanese ancestry formed the Varsity Victory Volunteers to assist with civil defense many later become part of the famous 100th Infantry Battalion UH Hilo Branch Growth resumed in the 1950s After three years of offering UH Extension Division courses at the old Hilo Boarding School the University of Hawai i Hilo Branch was approved In Manoa Earle Ernst staged the first kabuki production founding an Asian theater academic program that has grown and is now world renown War Protest The UH Community Colleges system was established in 1964 with Honolulu Kapi olani Kaua i and Maui campuses It evolved into seven campuses on four islands Two years later the founding campus now called UH Manoa established a School of Travel Industry Management and the forerunner programs of the School of Hawaiian Asian and Pacific Studies The John A Burns School of Medicine opened in 1967 and construction began on the first telescope atop Mauna Kea volcano in 1968 Leeward Community College was established that year and Hawai i Community College joined the system in 1969 D Thompson The 1970s saw the addition of Windward Community College the William S Richardson School of Law UH Hilo College of Agriculture and University of Hawai i West O ahu The next decade added the School of Architecture and School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology In athletics Manoa appoints its first full time director for women s sports Donnis Thompson and builds Rainbow now Les Murakami Stadium Stan Sheriff Center University Park of Science and Technology Phase I opened under the management of UH Hilo during the 1990s and Manoa added an award winning 10 000 seat 32 million Special Events Arena later named for Athletic
