    27 29 In Spring 2015 Core 5 College Preparatory students completed a unit on Environmental Health where they learned about environmental issues and environmental philosophy To coincide with this class teachers organized a beach cleanup As a part of this event the students were assigned to write journal reflections and then using Google slides present for 8 minutes on an environmental issue in a developing country Click photo to enlarge HTIC Updates Volunteering for the Annual Whale Count in Hawaii 2015 3 30 10 40 00 On Saturday February 28 2015 College Preparatory Professor Domingo took 19 HTIC students and me to participate in a whale watching whale counting volunteer activity on the Makapu u Lighthouse trail It was part of the whale count held held each year by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuaries NOAA At first I was hesitant about going because we had to meet early in the morning Also I am not a fan of hiking unknown areas Nevertheless I went and I am so thankful I did so The day was beautiful with clear skies and a light rain although it was really windy When we reached our spot halfway up the Makapu u trail I felt like I was back in my childhood home on Kauai There we have an amazing view of the ocean and during whale season we often sit and watch for whales At Makapu u however it was better We were so close to the ocean and could see many sprays from the blowholes of both mothers and calves when they surfaced There were some awesome breaches pectoral slaps tail slaps and all the other fun things that whales do to let us know they re out there I worked together with Prof Domingo to count the whales and our tally of the different ways to count the whales added up to between 80 90 whales in the four hours we were out there This experience re sparked my passion to take time to sit down relax and enjoy whale watching here in the Islands Keanna Woodward Click Photos to Enlarge HTIC Updates The Experience of a Lifetime By Kara N 2015 1 2 16 01 06 HTIC offers a chance for its students to attend programs in Japan Korea and China to study the language and culture of these countries This program is unique study abroad is seldom found associated with most A A degree programs The following is from Kara one of the college s local students currently studying at Tokai University in Japan Best of luck Kara with the rest of your studies On September 10 2014 my dream of studying abroad in Japan became a reality Thanks to HTIC s DEA Program I am now studying the Japanese language experiencing the culture and meeting a lot of international students during my six month stay abroad To my surprise I tested into the Level 6 foreign exchange student class which is equivalent to the material

    I just cannot believe that all of this happened When we started the Arts and Culture Appreciation Club this past year I did not expect so many people to join but the club has become a huge success My fellow club officers Desiree and Katie have helped me a great deal in planning and promoting our activities We have organized a Diamond Head Hike visited the KCC s Farmer s market and hosted a Karaoke party The Arts and Cultural Appreciation club has helped us create new memories for ourselves and for the HTIC community More events are planned so please join us Kiana Y Club President HTIC Updates Award Reception for the 25th Annual Shizuoka Friendship Postcard Art Contest 2014 2 24 12 24 37 On February 6 2014 an award reception was held at Hawaii Tokai International College to honor all Hawaii participants and award winners in the 25th Annual Shizuoka Friendship Postcard Art Contest sponsored by Tokai University Junior College Shizuoka Campus and Hawaii Tokai International College We would like to thank all of you who participated in the contest by sharing your talent love for art and cultural exchange We look forward to your participation in the next Shizuoka Friendship Postcard Art Contest and having some new faces join us HTIC Updates News from Recent Graduates 2014 2 3 9 43 00 HTIC would like to congratulate these HTIC graduates for their recent and continuing successes Otono Naniwa Summer 2010 Graduate Fall 2013 Graduate of Tulane University Otono just graduated with a B A from the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in December 2013 with a major in Management and a minor in Accounting Of her experience Otono writes What I learned at HTIC really helped me both with transferring to Tulane and with my graduation there My first semester at Tulane was really hard I felt lonely and study was very hard but gradually I got use to things The Business school program was really good Being a minority there was difficult at first but it was great getting to know more people from different countries and cultures I really enjoyed interaction in the classes and speaking English with amazing people I just graduated December 2013 and I am currently looking for a job Ken Hamanaka Summer 2010 grad and former Student Government President May 2013 Graduate of West Virginia University Ken graduated from West Virginia University in May 2013 and was then hired as an assistant coach at Lycoming College in Williamsport PA which is a Division 3 school Ken writes What I do is pretty much everything lol mainly scouting and video stuff but assisting the head coach helping recruiting staff organizing road games itineraries equipment stuff etc For now my future plan is to be a head coach for the Japan national team This may change though I also went to Estonia last summer with the Division 1 College All Star Team as an assistant operation guy Natsuka Koizumi Winter

    Community We also congratulate them for their hard work at Tokai University in Japan These students were Roxanne Caires Joel Yurkanin Scott Edward Barber Scott Whelden Davin Schmidt Devin Wong Reid Tabata Julius Taeza Joshua Miyamoto Alika Kenwell Dafun and Karin Stalter We wish them all the best as they complete their program in Japan The HTIC Learning Community also wishes to recognize the KCC Freeman Language scholars from the China Program who lived and studied on our campus until May of this year before leaving for their own cultural study program in China These young China scholars were Hailey Beckey Jenna Saito Catherine Smith Jay Viloria Niroshan Kariapper and Darcy Mahunui Souza New Liberal Arts adjunct faculty members for the Summer 2007 Term are Robert Arakaki Political Science Christine Hansen English Alan Lunt Computers and Video Editing Film Making Peter Moore Hawaiian History Cesare Polenghi Asian History and John White Economics Joining the College Preparatory Program as adjunct instructors are Harold Chung Joseph Holliday and Hye Young Sung HTIC Updates Laughter Yoga Makes Local Print and Television News 2007 6 1 15 04 00 In early 2007 HTIC s held a number of Laughter Yoga classes for its students and for the Honolulu community in general One of the first sessions held in January promoted cultural exchange between HTIC s regular student body Hanyang University students from Korea enrolled at HTIC in a short term program and Kapiolani Community College students enrolled in HTIC Spring classes and living in HTIC s dormitory News of this event was reported by Mr Leland Kim from KHNL s Channel 8 news crew in an evening broadcast For more on this story please read Laughter Yoga Breaks Cultural Barriers and to see parts of the broadcast itself please check out Laughter Yoga Video
