    studies in Japanese History and Japanese Anthropology during our Winter term are now nearing the end of their cultural studies program in Japan at Tokai University s Shonan campus HTIC congratulates all these students for their hard work while living and studying at HTIC as a part of our Learning Community We also congratulate them for their hard work at Tokai University in Japan These students were Roxanne Caires Joel Yurkanin Scott Edward Barber Scott Whelden Davin Schmidt Devin Wong Reid Tabata Julius Taeza Joshua Miyamoto Alika Kenwell Dafun and Karin Stalter We wish them all the best as they complete their program in Japan The HTIC Learning Community also wishes to recognize the KCC Freeman Language scholars from the China Program who lived and studied on our campus until May of this year before leaving for their own cultural study program in China These young China scholars were Hailey Beckey Jenna Saito Catherine Smith Jay Viloria Niroshan Kariapper and Darcy Mahunui Souza New Liberal Arts adjunct faculty members for the Summer 2007 Term are Robert Arakaki Political Science Christine Hansen English Alan Lunt Computers and Video Editing Film Making Peter Moore Hawaiian History Cesare Polenghi Asian History and John

    Literary Art in the first annual Peace Day Hawai i s Expressions of Peace Contest Sponsored by the State and the University of Hawai i s Matsunaga Peace Institute as part of the activities of Peace Day on September 21 the contest was statewide and open to the public Shu s essay was chosen as most outstanding from among those submitted by non native English speakers from across the State of Hawai i Due to prior travel plans for the weekend Shu was unable to attend the awards ceremony at the State Capitol but his English 100 teacher Ms Teuta Rizaj attended the event read his essay to the gathering and accepted the award on his behalf Included among the prizes awarded Shu were certificates from both the State Senate and the State House of Representatives Because Shu was unable to attend the September 21 ceremony he his English 100 classmates and Ms Rizaj have been invited back to the Hawai i State Capitol September 21 was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 as the International Day of Peace This is the first year that the State of Hawai i has joined this global event with its own Peace Day Hawai i celebration HTIC Updates Convocation Held on October 1 2007 10 2 16 45 00 The HTIC Fall Convocation was held at 11 30 A M on Monday October 1 2007 The ceremony began with a welcome by Student President Takaaki Honda followed by an introduction of Student Government leaders Vice Chancellor Douglas Fuqua then spoke on the theme of The Road to Success on behalf of Chancellor Naoto Yoshikawa who is currently in Japan and Korea on college business The College recognized those students who completed their College Preparatory Program over the past summer and gained acceptance into the two year college These students Eri Tominaga Marie Hirakata Steffie Tuan Takayoshi Tanaka and Mai Furuyashiki were presented with Certificates of Completion All students also received Hawaii Tokai s traditional Kukui Pendant which symbolizes the enlightenment that comes with learning In addition two College Prep students were recognized for high achievement on their TOEFL scores Both Akiko Fukuwa and Ryoji Okada became members of HTIC s 500 Club for scoring higher than 500 on their summer TOEFL tests The College also extended a warm aloha to all new HTIC students both those admitted to the College Prep Program and those admitted to the Liberal Arts College In the case of the latter HTIC was pleased to welcome a diverse freshman class comprised of U S Taiwanese and Japanese students New adjunct faculty were introduced to the HTIC Learning Community New Liberal Arts adjunct faculty members for the Fall 2007 Term are Naiad Wong World History Wayne Takazono Art and Yukiko Yamaguchi Japanese Language Joining the College Preparatory Program as adjunct instructors are Jan Marcec Minori Murata and Daniel Silver Finally special recognition was given to Shu Hikichi who won first place for the best essay by a

    more politically aware and geographically informed global citizens Ms Oribio reserved space in the learning center for the banner so students faculty and staff could write messages of good wishes and encouragement to these soldiers all separated from family and friends in and around Honolulu Hawaii during the December January holiday season HTIC Updates Fall 2007 Commencement Ceremony Held 2007 12 17 13 52 47 Hawaii Tokai International College held its Fall Commencement Ceremony on Saturday December 8 2007 at 4 00 pm in the college s auditorium Nineteen students received their Associate in Arts degree at the ceremonies The highlight of the afternoon s ceremonies came in the speeches by graduating students Takahisa Koike and Takaaki Honda who were selected by their classmates to speak on behalf of their class Takahisa ended his speech with a reference to American pop culture saying Finally I conclude my HTIC life The tuition fee is 3 050 The dormitory room fee is 1 200 The meal coupon fee is 500 My experiences here at HTIC priceless Takaaki in his thoughtfully reflective remarks encapsulated the essence of a liberal arts education when he noted that my life in this school influenced me to think at all times I was always forced to think about the meanings of all things Students completing their studies were Maaya Abe Aya Fujii Yasuko Fujii Kento Ishida Shunsuke Kinoshita Takahisa Koike Tsuyoshi Matsumura Hiroshi Nakamura Itsuki Shibakiri Yumiko Uchino Takuma Hirako Takaaki Honda Mirei Kasai Daisuke Kinoshita Daijiro Komatsu Shu Hikichi Seira Nakayama Yuriko Ohno and Tetsuya Yamamoto Ten of the graduates will continue their education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa four will complete their studies at Tokai University campuses in Japan and one student will attend Hawaii Healing Arts College Honors graduates who maintained a cumulative GPA of 3 65 or higher HTIC Updates Alumni from Germany Hawaii and Japan Reconnect at HTIC 2007 12 11 16 55 41 HTIC s Annual Alumni Pau Hana gathering took place on November 28 2007 in the 19th floor reception hall Faculty and staff joined the returning alumni including two mothers accompanied by their children Ms Lydia Shepherd who currently works at HTIC as a staff member in the International Programs office and Ms Yuki Shoji who completed her Associate in Arts degree in 2000 and her baccalaureate degree from the University of Hawaii in 2003 Most of the other alumni in attendance at the Pau Hana are currently completing their studies at the University of Hawaii and elsewhere in Hawaii or are successfully employed in Honolulu It was rewarding to learn of their many successes Ms Birgit Neldner another HTIC alumna from Europe missed the Nov 28th Pau Hana but stopped by HTIC later in that week to catch up with classmates faculty and staff Birgit who is from Germany completed her Associate in Arts degree at HTIC before transferring to Arizona State University where she earned a bachelor s degree in travel industry management After graduating

    apply themselves to their studies and my study there challenged me to take steps toward reaching my goals I established good friendships and a strong support network in college I will continue these relationships after graduation as we lived studied and spent time together and helped each other through troubled times We had many choices of universities to which to transfer after graduation from HTIC I was surprised about how many possibilities and opportunities there were Nothing can replace my experiences at HTIC I could not experience this exciting life anywhere else in the world Mr Ken Hamanaka Japan 2010 HTIC Alumus West Virginia University Major Athletic Coaching Education I am attending West Virginia University WVU right now where my major is Athletic Coaching Education I am also a student manager for the men s basketball team at WVU My dream has been to become a basketball coach either in the U S or in Japan When I thought about the process of how to make this dream come true I realized that I needed to learn English first That s why I decided to come to HTIC My decision to come to HTIC was definitely the right one During my first year I did not know any English at all and I faced difficulties communicating and living in the U S I cannot express how much I appreciate my teachers and the staff at HTIC who supported me throughout my time as a student there Teachers in the College Preparatory Program taught me not only English but also how to study and communicate with people in English After I was accepted into HTIC I was no longer afraid of pursuing my dream I am now able to communicate with foreigners in English without any shyness or hesitation That is
