  • Henry Sturgis Dennison Collection
    a visit to the National Cash Register Factory in Dayton Ohio and includes a brief account of women s working conditions there The collection also contains 7 office diaries from 1911 to 1933 in which secretaries most likely women record Dennison s activities In later life Dennison became a prolific author and speaker on industrial management and vocational education There is material on women active between 1913 and 1917 in the Boston Placement Bureau a private vocational education and placement agency for Boston public school students later taken over by the Boston School Committee This folder includes letters from Susan J Ginn acting General Secretary of the Placement Bureau Edith M Howes President of the Girls Trade Education League Amy C Clifton Director of the Co operative Employment Bureau of Providence and Mary Follet of the Women s Municipal League Although none of Dennison s work on scientific management focuses on gender the collection contains some information on women business researchers including Millicent Pond who conducted psychological tests on 2700 employees of Scovill Manufacturing Company in 1925 Miss Follet who lectured on the constructive use of conflict to the Bureau of Personnel Administration in New York City New York in

    information about the management and labor practices of department stores in which women were both a majority of the employees and a majority of the customers They document a rise in retail workers wages a decrease in hours and occasional labor unrest Women labor union officials are signatories to several of the contracts notably Anna Blank who was Business Manager and later Vice President of Local No 2 United Retail

    the range of women s roles in the corporate world in the 1960s and early 1970s Women at Home and Abroad Social Political and Cultural Activities Goldston was a prominent spokesman for corporate social responsibility As such he wrote numerous letters and speeches about social policies including corporate financing of inner city housing the Federal Family Assistance Act of 1970 and gender equity in corporate boardrooms In addition the collection contains photographs correspondence newspaper clippings and other materials on Goldston s diverse cultural and charitable interests in which his wife Elaine Charlotte Friedman Goldston played an important role Women at Work Professional Labor Other Professionals Papers regarding Goldston s financial support and fundraising for women in the arts include correspondence with painter Corita Kent who designed the Boston landmark natural gas tank on the Neponset River for Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates and Elma Lewis Director of the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts in Roxbury The collection also includes a large amount of correspondence between Goldston s public relations associate O F Ozzie Ingram and women writers editors and publishers who were involved in publicizing Eli Goldston s civic activities Goldston s office staff most notably his administrative assistant

    years of their marriage James Hunnewell was living in the Pacific On November 6 1820 she wrote It is indeed with a kind of melancholy pleasure I have sat down to write There is a satisfaction in reflecting on the endearing relation which you sustain towards me that I would not part with for worlds but when I consider the distance that separates us and the time that has and will elapse before we meet my feelings are overpowered Instead of becoming habituated to your absence by length of time I seem everyday less reconciled to it still alone seems stamped on everything around me The collection also includes seven letters from Elizabeth Dorr secretary of the Dorchester Sailor s Friends Society concerning the donation of books to be placed in a ship s library for the spiritual renovation of our brethren of the deep Women at Work Professional Labor Other Professionals boxes 1 6 and 10 Missionary S M Bingham married to Rev Hiram Bingham wrote three letters to James Hunnewell Her letters mainly discuss her hopes for his conversion Two letters from Lucy Whiting S M Bingham s sister concern Sophia and Lucy Bingham daughters of the Binghams

    for most of the history of department stores Resseguie s files show that women were present throughout these organizations A clipping from Women s Wear Daily of May 21 1964 offers a composite of the happy buyer based on a survey of 107 buyers male and female A married woman who is over 55 and has worked with a big store in the Far West for 20 years Several clippings from 1957 to 1963 address the professional development of comparison shoppers women who visited competitors stores to report on prices and the availability of goods From comparison shopping one article asserts which pays in the range of stenographic work many advance to the executive ladder Macy s considers comparison shopping part of its executive training program The collection contains clippings on a wide range of topics of gender interest such as fashion and consumer habits There are articles on the furor that resulted when Dior raised its hemlines by six inches in 1953 Some skirts are nearly 18 inches off the floor one article reports A folder on Out Size Apparel Stores reveals that a number of women opened tall girl specialty shops in the early 1950s Analyses by Fairfield Publications publishers of Women s Wear Daily of the Department of Commerce s 1948 and 1954 Census of Business compare the number of men s and women s clothing stores A 1957 clipping reports based on a survey on consumer spending that professional and semi professional women workers spent more money on clothing than any other group of women Resseguie was interested in the nitty gritty details of the development of department stores as well as in the broader arenas of political and cultural change Clippings on the controversial development of department store charge accounts include a 1954 article probably
