  • Heritage Christian University - Events - Jesus As The Messiah Adult Education Course
    The course will be conducted from 8 a m noon Description of the Course The New Testament presents Jesus as the Jewish Messiah but one who is misunderstood by almost everyone around him throughout his life What did ancient Jews anticipate for a Messiah What does the Hebrew Bible promise What did Jesus own followers want out of a Messiah and what did they think Jesus was doing This class will explore these questions through a survey of Scripture and other ancient documents including the Dead Sea Scrolls Students will grow in their appreciation of the way the Gospel writers present Jesus a controversial Messiah in his own lifetime but ultimately victorious Course Materials Will be distributed on the day of the seminar About the Instructor Dr Ed Gallagher received his PhD in biblical studies and ancient Judaism from Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion He regularly presents his research at national and international conferences and his articles appear in major international journals His recent monograph is titled Hebrew Scripture in Patristic Biblical Theory Brill Dr Gallagher has taught at HCU for the past seven years and serves as deacon and Bible class teacher for the Florence Blvd Church

  • Heritage Christian University - Events - Apocryphal Gospels and The Historical Jesus: What Can Recent Discoveries Teach Us?
    The forum will be conducted at 6 30 p m in Overton Memorial Library The recent publicity surrounding a Coptic fragment called by scholars The Gospel of Jesus Wife has reignited interest in ancient Christian apocryphal writings not included in the New Testament During this hour long open forum Dr Jeremy Barrier a specialist in Coptic Christian literature will discuss this latest find examine its possible authenticity and consider how it contributes to our understanding of Jesus and early Christianity Particular attention will be given to traditions about the marital status of Jesus and what Christians today might make of these traditions Following Dr Barrier s presentation significant time will be allotted for questions from the audience Dr Jeremy Barrier PhD from Brite Divinity School affiliated with Texas Christian University 2008 has published several scholastic articles on Coptic Christianity and a book on the apocryphal writing entitled The Acts of Paul and Thecla 2009 He has participated in an international workshop on Coptic Papyrology in Leipzig Germany and has now been appointed an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in collaboration with the Universität Regensburg Germany He regularly presents his research at national and international conferences Dr Barrier has taught at
