    prior to your last day of enrollment or June 30 of the award year whichever comes first Initial awards are estimated based on the results of the FAFSA and are based on a full time enrollment calculation Estimates will change if any criteria used to determine your eligibility degree status satisfactory progress and income or family information changes The amount actually paid to you from the Federal Pell Grant will be prorated if you enroll for less than 12 credit hours in a given term or if you take courses outside your program of study You must begin attending all of your classes on the first day If you are withdrawn for non attendance prior to the actual payment of Pell Grant funds your eligibility could be cancelled Pell Grant funding is now a limit to the total amount of Pell Grant that a student may receive which is the equivalent of 6 school years 600 maximum Once a total amount of Pell Grant eligibility has been received a student can no longer receive Pell Grant aid Iraq Afghanistan Service Grant Awards are for Pell eligible student whose parent or guardian died as a result of U S military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11 2001 may receive increased amounts of Federal Student Aid if the student was less than 24 years old when the parent or guardian died or was enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of the parent or guardian s death There are two different provisions for such students depending on whether the student has an EFC that falls within the range for Pell eligibility or not Provision 1 Zero EFC Treatment for Children of Soldiers Pell eligible students will receive the Zero EFC maximum Pell Grant Award HCU will use an EFC of 0 to package all Federal Student Aid if the student meeting the above criteria Exception The award may not exceed the student s cost of attendance Provision 2 Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant Non Pell Eligible students will receive the Iraq Afghanistan Service Grant equal to the amount of a maximum Pell Grant Award Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants are made under the same terms and conditions as Pell and disbursements for each payment period are calculated in the same manner as Pell Exception The award may not exceed the student s cost of attendance Learn how the automatic federal budget cuts known as the sequester will affect the Iraq Afghanistan Service Grant Awards Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant FSEOG is a need based federal grant awarded to undergraduates seeking a first undergraduate degree in an eligible program who have exceptional financial need The award amount at Heritage varies by enrollment and allocation Priority is given to students with an Estimated Family Contribution EFC of 0 who apply for financial aid early Limited funding is available in this program and funding is awarded on a first come first served basis Recipients are chosen based on EFC Initial

    interest expense repayment provisions and potential loan servicing fees in order to determine the best choice Important Note about Accepting Federal Direct Loans Prior to receiving any federally funded student loan the Federal Government requires student loan borrowers to complete loan counseling Entrance and Exit to ensure the understanding of Student Borrower Rights and Responsibilities and the obligations students are assuming Loan counseling will also help students to learn about loan terms tips for developing a personal budget and helpful advice on how to manage educational expenses NOTE In accordance with federal regulations HCU has the right to refuse to certify a loan or to certify a loan request for a reduced amount All students receiving Federal Direct student loans at HCU must complete an online ENTRANCE Counseling Session and Sign the Master Promissory Note MPN All students receiving Federal Direct student loans at HCU who file an intent to graduate withdraw or drop below half time enrollment must complete an online EXIT Counseling Session Students will need the PIN number used to complete their FAFSA and should allow approximately 30 minutes to complete the required loan counseling Loan disbursements will NOT be released until the student has completed the Entrance Counseling Session A HOLD is attached to the records of students who are required to complete the Exit Counseling and will remain until the Exit Counseling is complete Because holds will prevent school registration and access to official transcripts students are encouraged to respond in a timely manner when instructed to complete the Exit Counseling Session Primary Student Education Loan Options Federal Direct Loan Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students PLUS Non Federal Private or Alternative Loans Federal Direct Loans Federal Subsidized Loans have their interest paid by the federal government while the student is in school enrolled at least half time and during the Loan Grace Period Currently the interest rate for federal subsidized loans is 3 86 Federal Unsubsidized Loans accrue interest which the student in responsible for paying from the time the loan is disbursed either to the student or to the student s account Currently the interest rate for federal unsubsidized loans is 3 86 In both cases the loans are made available to the student after the student has completed the FAFSA and has been awarded other forms of federal financial aid In both cases the student is the borrower of the loan and in both cases loan repayment can be deferred for as long as the student is enrolled at least half time With the Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students PLUS the parent of the dependent undergraduate student is the borrower of the loan The loan can be made available after the student has completed the FAFSA and has been awarded other forms of federal financial aid The parent may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus other forms of aid for each academic year Like the federal direct Unsubsidized Loan interest accrues from the time the

    University for academic reasons are ineligible to receive financial aid until they have been reinstated to the University have submitted an appeal and have re established eligibility through the appeals process Appeal Procedures Reinstatement of aid is never automatic A student may appeal the suspension of financial aid eligibility based on extenuating circumstances see definition of extenuating circumstances below An HCU Appeal Application is available here or from the Office of Financial Aid Students who wish to appeal must submit the appeal form and all required documentation directly to the Office of Financial Aid Appeals should be made in a timely manner but no later than the appeal deadline announced by the Office of Financial Aid for each term Unless otherwise specified the deadline is 5 calendar days from the start of the semester Appeals may be considered if a student s failure to comply with one or more standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress is due to Extenuating Circumstances or events beyond the student s control Students will be allowed one appeal after failing SAP minimums The mitigating circumstances must be appropriately documented for the specific semester s in which the deficiency occurred Appeals are made through the Office of Financial Aid must be submitted using by the official form and will require the following Explanation and documentation regarding the mitigating circumstances that are the basis for the student s failure to make SAP Statement and documentation as to what has changed in the student s situation that would allow the student to meet SAP in future terms Appeals are reviewed in the Office of Financial Aid by a committee generally made up of three members Director or Associate Director of Financial Aid the Academic Dean and the student s academic advisor Students will be notified of the appeal decision within 2 3 weeks of submission The committee will review each appeal on an individual basis to determine whether there are circumstances beyond the student s control that prevented him or her from maintaining satisfactory academic progress The review will take into account prior appeals submitted and approved the thoroughness of documentation student s current cumulative GPA student s current completion rate length of time until the student s program is complete resolution of all extenuating circumstances and an explanation of all semesters in which the student failed to meet standards Appeal Decisions All appeal decisions are final A written notification of the decision will be delivered to the student by the Office of Financial Aid Successful appeals will allow a student to be placed on FINANCIAL AID PROBATION and the student must if applicable meet the probation status conditions outlined in the appeal decision A Letter of Notification of Reinstatement of Financial Aid sent to the student will give the conditions and or an academic plan the student must achieve per semester Probation Status Successful appeals will allow a student to be placed in PROBATION status Students must meet the conditions outlined in the appeal decision Letters or notifications

    award year ALL FAFSA applicants and parents of dependent applicants who indicate they have filed or will file a 2012 federal tax return will be directed to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to report and or update their income information on the FAFSA When prompted to do so on the FAFSA click Link To IRS Your FAFSA will be saved and you will be transferred to the IRS Web site On the IRS Web site enter the requested information Once the IRS has validated your identification your IRS tax information will display You can either transfer your information from the IRS or choose to return to FAFSA on the Web from the IRS Web site If you do not transfer your information or choose not to return from the IRS Web site you will have to log in to open your saved FAFSA If you transfer your IRS tax information questions that are populated with tax information will be marked with Transferred from the IRS This step needs to be completed for both student and parent if both have filed federal tax returns Once the IRS transfer for the student is complete click back into the FAFSA and complete the same process for parent tax information with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool Updating Your FAFSA Information Families who have completed their initial FAFSA with estimated income and have since completed their federal tax returns should use the data retrieval process to update the FAFSA by logging back into their FAFSA and Click View Processed FAFSA Then Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA Then select Financial Information and change the tax filing status to Filed Families who have completed their initial FAFSA and chose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool are encouraged as well to update the FAFSA Applicants can go back into the FAFSA and choose the IRS Data Retrieval tool and resubmit the FAFSA NOTE Applicants who retrieve IRS data but subsequently change it will be informed that they will need to explain why the information they provided is more accurate than the information that would have been obtained directly from the IRS They will need to provide information obtained directly from the IRS Timeline to Complete Federal Verification Requirements Students who are notified that their SAR has been selected for Verification are advised to begin collecting the necessary data and or documents as soon as possible Click here to view the Timeline to submit Verification Documents Fall 2013 When a Students is not Required to File a 2012 Federal Tax Return Not everyone is required to file a tax return Some people may be able to forgo the federal tax filing process based on IRS s policy for filing Click here to find out if you need to complete a federal tax return Students who are not required to file a 2012 Federal Tax Return Dependent Students students who were required to provide parent information on the FAFSA If a parent or dependent student is
